Storm damage roof reports near South Bank

About our storm damage roof report in South Bank

High winds usually affect the parts of a roof that are already exposed or loose. Slates and tiles slip or blow off, ridge and hip tiles lift, flashings pull away and flat roof coverings can tear. Trees and branches can also hit roofs in a storm. We record the damage on your roof and photograph each part. Where we also see signs of older wear, the report records that too. If you’re worried about flat roof edges peeled back and ridge tiles that have come loose, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

In London, leaks often start somewhere hidden: the valley gutter in a butterfly roof, a parapet gutter, a chimney flashing or the flat roof over a rear extension. For a leak or storm damage in South Bank, those hidden details are where the inspection begins. Water from a hidden gutter can run along joists and show up a room or two away.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Can I check my roof myself?

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

How it works

We’ll ask a few questions first, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes an hour or two at a typical home, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. In a London conversion, the way into the loft space is often from a communal landing or the top flat. Where that is the case, access needs agreeing with whoever controls that landing. Otherwise, the visit in South Bank runs like any other.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there’s access, for water damage.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. You receive the written report with photos.

What a storm damage roof report looks like in South Bank

Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around South Bank. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs. Inner London’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces often have Welsh slate roofs. Behind many of their parapets sit butterfly roofs and valley gutters that cannot be seen from the pavement. If your home in South Bank is one of them, lead flashings, party-wall upstands and shared chimney stacks are part of the picture too. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed.

Take an older house close to St John's Church: the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself. If you own a rental within reach of London Waterloo station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.

Tips from our surveys

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • Keep a note of the date of the storm
  • Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in
  • Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
  • Keep receipts for any emergency work

You get the report by email and pass it to your insurer yourself. We don’t deal with the insurer on your behalf.

Keep records of roof work and surveys. They help show the roof was in good order before a storm.

How we price storm damage roof reports

Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:

  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • Which survey package you book
  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely

Every price we give includes VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Our price is from £150, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Booking your survey

You don’t need to know any roofing terms. It is enough to tell us:

  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • When you need the report by
  • The property’s address and postcode
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors

To book a survey, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and what you’d like to know about the roof. You will know the price before anything is booked.

Common roof problems in South Bank

Strong winds lift loose or poorly fixed slates and tiles, ridge pieces and flashings. Rain can then blow in where slates or tiles have gone. Most people book a report soon after a storm, when they’ve seen damage or water has come in.

Typical things we’re asked to look at include:

  • Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls
  • Holes or cracks caused by debris
  • Water coming in after the storm
  • Flat roof edges peeled back

Trees in and around Jubilee Gardens shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • What happens after the report arrives
  • Whether the loft is part of the inspection
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey
  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price

When you need someone else

Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:

  • Repair costs or quotes for the work
  • Acting for you with the insurer
  • What your policy covers, which depends on its wording

If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.

South Bank questions

Is my home in South Bank listed or in a conservation area?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

Do you cover South Bank?

Yes, South Bank is within the area we cover. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know about the property.

Will you walk on the roof?

Not unless it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.

Can you put a tarpaulin over the damage?

Call a roofer for emergency temporary protection. Take photos from the ground first if it’s safe. Keep receipts in case your insurer asks for them.

Should I go up on the roof to take photos?

Only from ground level or from windows. Never climb onto a roof after a storm. Binoculars can help you see damage from below and we’ll inspect the rest from safe positions.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

Surveys run on any day of the week. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or email us.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
