How a storm damage roof report works in Spring Vale

Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies by policy. Check your own policy wording. Whether the weather met it is for your insurer. Our part is recording the damage to your roof and its likely cause. The report includes photos of each area of damage, and you decide what to send. The claim decision rests with your insurer. If you are worried about broken or displaced guttering and slates and tiles blown off the roof, we can find out what’s behind it.

Many homes in small places like Spring Vale face open ground, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.

What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It is useful right away, and a good reference for later, for instance when you want to check whether anything has changed.

How it works

Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings as a written report with photos, sent to you by email. As for time on site, it normally takes between one and two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Older rural homes like those around Spring Vale can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen.

  1. You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there’s access, for water damage.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

How to prepare

  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

Advice

What we cannot see

It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:

  • A price for the repairs
  • Negotiating a claim settlement
  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and does not.

Wind, rain and roofs in Spring Vale

Spring Vale is within about 1 mile of the coast, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. In a coastal gale, rain is driven sideways into laps, verges and flashings, while salt slowly corrodes metal fixings and flashings. With Nunwell House about 3.2 miles south-west, Spring Vale sits in an area with a long building history. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

If you look after a building like Nettlestone Primary School, water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot. For landlords with property near Ryde St Johns Road station, finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused.

Spring Vale is about 2 miles east of Ryde, in the Isle of Wight. Surveys in Spring Vale work the same way as everywhere we cover: a proper look at everything that’s safely in view, photographs and a clear written report. Our area takes in places right across the Isle of Wight, large and small. We also survey roofs in Portsmouth.

Surveys in PO34 are booked the same way as anywhere else. Whether your property is on Springvale Road and Oakhill Road or anywhere close by, we can help. Neighbouring places we cover for storm damage roof reports include Puckpool (1 mile west), Pondwell (1 mile south), Seaview (1 mile south-east), Appley (1 mile west) and Nettlestone (1 mile south-east). We also work in nearby towns like Newport (8 miles west), Cowes (8 miles west), Sandown (5 miles south), Shanklin (7 miles south), Ventnor (10 miles south-west) and East Cowes (7 miles west). Remote addresses need a little more planning, so tell us where you are when you book.

FAQs for Spring Vale

Will you come out to Spring Vale?

Yes. Spring Vale is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Does being near the coast affect roofs in Spring Vale?

Often, yes. Within about 1 mile of the sea, as Spring Vale is, metal fixings wear faster and gales find any loose ridge or slate.

Will you check the loft?

Yes, where the survey calls for it and there’s safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement.

What if my insurer declines the claim?

Complain to your insurer first. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. Our report gives you an independent record of the roof, but we can’t say how it will turn out.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only where it is safe to do so. We check everything that can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We check the parts we’re given access to, and the report makes that clear.

How should I record storm damage myself?

Only from ground level or from windows. Never climb onto a roof after a storm. With binoculars, you can see a lot from the ground and we will inspect the rest from safe positions.

Why act early in Spring Vale

If a roofer needs to make the roof safe, take photos first if you can do so safely from ground level. That keeps a record of how it looked. Outbuildings and barns around Spring Vale are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, all with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Why us?

  • More than 20 years surveying roofs
  • We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
  • An independent view of the roof
  • 98% customer satisfaction

Can I check my roof myself?

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That is where a survey comes in.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.

What we’re asked to look at in Spring Vale

Strong winds lift loose or poorly fixed slates and tiles, ridge pieces and flashings. Driving rain then gets in through the gaps. People normally call us after a storm, once they’ve noticed damage or a leak.

A survey can pick up problems like:

  • Roofs hit by falling trees
  • Broken or displaced guttering
  • Torn or lifted flat roof coverings
  • Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near St. Peter's Church, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in.

Questions to ask before booking
