Why it’s worth a survey now in Taplow
A few slipped slates can soon lead to wet timbers. Getting it recorded and repaired sooner is normally better. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Taplow, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £150, including VAT.

About our storm damage roof report in Taplow
High winds normally affect the parts of a roof that are already exposed or loose. Typical damage includes lost slates and tiles, lifted ridges, loose flashings and torn flat roof coverings. Trees and branches can also hit roofs in a storm. We record the damage on your roof and photograph each part. Where we also see signs of older wear, the report records that too. Typical surveys look at flat roof edges peeled back and slates and tiles blown off the roof, on gutters and fascias, flat roofs and flashings.
In a village or hamlet like Taplow, older cottages and farmhouses frequently have roofs that have been patched over many years. A new leak may be fresh damage or the latest sign of long-term wear, which matters if you’re thinking of an insurance claim. We look at everything that’s safely in view and set out what we find. Damp in old walls and timbers is slow to dry, so the sooner the cause is found the better.
What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later.

What we look for on each type of roof
Slate roofs
In high winds, slates can slip or go, often where nails have rusted. We record which slates have moved and any signs of older nail fatigue.
Clay and concrete tiles
Tiles can lift, crack or blow off in high winds. We record which are damaged and where.
Leaks and storm damage in Taplow
About 1.8 miles north lies Cliveden, a reminder of how long the area around Taplow has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in.
If you own a rental within reach of Taplow station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. If you run a hotel or guest house in or near Taplow, a roof problem can mean rooms out of use. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Nicolas, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in.

What happens on the day
Before we start, tell us why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. The visit typically takes an hour or two at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Somewhere like Taplow needs a little journey planning: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect what can safely be seen, inside and out.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- We look at the roof from wherever it is safe.
- Each area of damage is photographed and described.
- The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
- We send you the report by email for your insurer.
Before the survey
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Common questions in Taplow
Will you come out to Taplow?
Yes. Taplow is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Is Taplow in the area you cover?
Yes, Taplow is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Taplow as anywhere else.
What if my insurer declines the claim?
Start by complaining to the insurer. If it isn’t resolved, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help. The Ombudsman asks about storm conditions, whether the damage is consistent with a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only where it’s safe to do so. We inspect whatever is safely visible: from the ground, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
What if the roof was already worn?
Wear and tear is typically excluded from home insurance. Our report records storm damage and any older wear we see, so it is clear what we found. How the policy applies is up to your insurer.
How experienced are you?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
What this survey cannot tell you
Every survey has limits, and it’s better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:
- A price for the repairs
- A decision on your insurance claim
- Your insurer’s view of the claim
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll recommend the right survey. The full list of what we check.
Roofs we survey in Taplow
- Ridges and hips
- Flat roofs
- Flashings
- Chimney stacks
- Gutters and fascias
- Slate and tile slopes
Checking the roof from the ground
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.
Practical tips
A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Some pointers:
- Photograph damage inside the house too
- Check how your policy defines a storm
- File receipts for anything you pay for
- Photograph the damage safely from below

Clear gutters and outlets before the stormy months. Blocked drainage can add water damage to wind damage.
