About our gutter survey in Taplow

Leaves, moss and silt are the usual reasons gutters block. Buildings near trees collect more, and moss washing off a tiled or slate roof adds to it. We note where gutters are clogged or holding water, which outlets and hoppers are choked and whether overflows are working. The photographs show you exactly what we found. Blocked gutters are easy to put off but it rarely improves. If you’ve noticed gutters full of debris and silt and valley or box gutters that overflow inside, we can find out what’s behind it, on eaves gutters, parapet and box gutters and downpipes alike.

Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Gutter surveys around Taplow

With Cliveden about 1.8 miles north, Taplow sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Whatever the covering, it’s often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.

Anyone responsible for a site like St Nicolas' Church of England Combined School will know that its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. Take an older house close to Church of St Nicolas: its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.

Common roof problems in Taplow

Many people get in touch after seeing water pour over a gutter in heavy rain. Others spot damp patches, ceiling stains or green marks on the walls. A survey helps show where the water is coming from before more damage is done.

Problems we come across often include:

  • Brackets that have dropped or snapped
  • Overflowing eaves gutters
  • Overflowing valley or parapet gutters
  • Dripping or leaking gutter joints

Trees in and around Braywick Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.

What’s in a roof survey

Checking the roof from ground level

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.

Useful tips for Taplow property owners

Getting the most from a gutter survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:

  • Check downpipe clips are holding
  • Keep climbers away from the eaves
  • Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
  • Book gutter clearing once a year, more often near trees

If we think the problem lies underground, we will say so, so a drain survey can be arranged. Anything else we notice on the roof, as far as we can see it, is noted too.

Do not forget valley, parapet and box gutters. They collect leaves and silt just like eaves gutters but they’re much harder to spot, so check they’re included in any clearing work.

Taplow: your questions answered

Will you come out to Taplow?

Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

I let a flat near Taplow station. Can you check the roof?

Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. Just ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the details.

Can you tell me if my old gutters contain asbestos?

No. We do not test for asbestos. If rainwater goods or soffits look like they could contain asbestos, we note it and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

Simply phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day.

Are hidden gutters like valleys and box gutters included?

Yes, as far as they can safely be seen. We look from vantage points, the roof space and the roof itself where safe, and by drone where it is applicable.

Do you look in the roof space?

If it is needed and safe to reach, yes. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement.

Why get it checked now?

Overflowing water soaks the walls under the gutter. Given time, it can cause damp patches, damaged pointing and rot in nearby timber. Spotting the problem early tends to mean a simpler fix. Older and listed buildings around Taplow may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so leaving a defect until it’s urgent leaves less time to plan.

Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we can help you choose.

  • Eaves gutters
  • Downpipes
  • Valley gutters
  • Fascias and soffits

How the survey works

Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. All in, the survey normally takes about 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Cottages and farmhouses around Taplow often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. You tell us where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
  2. The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and windows.
  3. Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can be seen safely.
  4. Where it is safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
  5. A photo-illustrated written report and recommendations follows.
