Storm damage roof report in The Willows
A storm damage roof report is priced from £150. You get a written report with photos by email. It doesn’t price the repairs, so you will need a roofer’s quote for that. The insurer may still send a loss adjuster of its own. What you get is an independent record of the damage and what seems to have caused it. If you’ve noticed loose or torn flashings and gaps where slates or tiles have gone, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on ridges and hips, gutters and fascias and chimney stacks alike.
In a village or hamlet like The Willows, older cottages and farmhouses often have roofs that have been patched over many years. A new leak may be fresh damage or the latest sign of long-term wear, which matters if you are thinking of an insurance claim. The report says what was seen and what it points to. Older walls and timbers hold water for a long time, so it is worth finding the cause soon.
It isn’t only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend.

What we can’t see
Every survey has limits, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:

Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work around your tenants.
For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant, which helps with budgets and planning.
Wind, rain and roofs in The Willows
Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it’s listed or in a conservation area. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed.
Take a building like Furneux Pelham Church of England School: water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot. For landlords with property near Stansted Mountfitchet station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer straight away. The streets around a church such as Church of St Mary are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, leaks on older roofs frequently start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.

Why get it checked now?
With an independent report, you have something specific to show your insurer. It sets out what we found and the likely cause, alongside any photos you took yourself. For an older or listed building in a place like The Willows, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. We’ll give you the figure before anything is booked.

What we do, step by step
We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. Most surveys take about 1–2 hours for most houses; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. For a village or hamlet like The Willows, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- You let us know when the storm was and what damage you’ve seen.
- We view the roof from wherever it can safely be seen, including the loft where there’s access.
- The damage is recorded with photographs, area by area.
- We note the likely cause, including any signs of wear that were there before the storm.
- The findings are written up with photographs for you to share with your insurer.
Before we arrive
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
Arrange a survey

Advice
The Willows: your questions answered
Do you carry out roof surveys in The Willows?
Yes, The Willows is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
How do I find out if my home in The Willows is listed?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.
How long does the survey take?
Time on site depends on the roof; most visits take about one to two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. The report is sent afterwards by email.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Not always. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
Do you use drones?
Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We fly a sub-250g drone and we are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.

Ridge and hip tiles
Water can get in where ridge tiles have moved. We photograph and describe the damage.
Clay and concrete tiles
Tiles without fixings can move more easily in wind. We note what we can see of how tiles are fixed.
