Different roofs, different checks

Chimney stacks

Wind can pull the flashings away from a chimney. Loose flashings are recorded.

Lead flashings

Flashings with older defects often fail in high winds. Our report separates fresh damage from older wear where we can.

About our storm damage roof report in Uppend

After a storm, safety comes first. Photograph the damage from the ground or a window, and never climb up. If water is coming in, a roofer can put temporary protection in place. Our report records the damage so you have an independent record to give your insurer. Keep receipts for any emergency work. We survey slate and tile slopes, gutters and fascias and flat roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are loose or torn flashings and damage from fallen branches or debris.

For a small place like Uppend, the inspection is the same as anywhere: the journey and access are just planned beforehand. Let us know where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, along with any repairs done before. Photos of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.

The written findings come by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

What a survey costs

We confirm the price for your roof before booking. These are the things that affect it:

  • How big the roof is
  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office

Our price is from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included.

Booking your survey

A little information up front helps. Please include:

  • How the loft is reached, if there is one
  • Any deadline, like an exchange date
  • The property’s address and postcode
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them

To arrange a survey, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and tell us the address and what’s prompted the survey. You will know the price before anything is booked.

What a storm damage roof report does not cover

This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • The outcome of a claim
  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer
  • What your policy covers, which depends on its wording

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before you book. The full list of what we check.

Tips from our surveys

There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:

  • Keep receipts for any emergency work
  • Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can
  • Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
  • Keep a note of the date of the storm

Questions about the findings are always welcome. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.

Clear gutters and outlets before the stormy months. Overflowing gutters can make storm damage worse.

Wind, rain and roofs in Uppend

In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts. Much Hadham Palace, about 4.7 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Uppend. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

Anyone responsible for a site like Farnham Church of England Primary School will know that tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back. Take an older house close to Church of St Mary the Virgin: leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.

Uppend is about 3 miles north of Bishop's Stortford, in Hertfordshire. Uppend gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful inspection, photos and a written report. Uppend is one of the places in Hertfordshire we cover. You can also see our page for Chelmsford.

Do you need a storm damage roof report in Uppend?

Falling trees and branches can damage roofs in high winds. We record the damage and where it is, backed up with photos.

We’re often asked to look at:

  • Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls
  • Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles
  • New damp or leaks inside
  • Broken or displaced guttering

Landlords with a home close to Stansted Mountfitchet station may find that finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours
  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • How soon the report will arrive
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?

What to expect from a roof survey

Uppend: your questions answered

Is my home in Uppend listed or in a conservation area?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Is Uppend within the area you cover?

Yes, Uppend is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Yes, where it is applicable. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We are a CAA-registered drone operator.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it is safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where applicable.

How much is a storm damage roof report?

Our reports start from £150. Commercial and larger roofs are quoted on size. Repair costs aren’t part of the report.

How long does the survey take?

Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for a house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. The report follows by email.

Will you check the loft?

If it is needed and safe to reach, yes. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.

How the survey works

Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and record our findings for the written report. It typically takes an hour or two at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. For a village or hamlet like Uppend, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. The roof is inspected from safe positions.
  3. We record and photograph the damage.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Preparing for the visit

  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
  • Check pets are kept safely away
