Storm damage roof report in Farnham: what you get

What counts as a storm depends on your policy, though many use gusts of about 55 mph. Check your own policy wording. Whether the weather met it is for your insurer. Our part is recording the damage to your roof and its likely cause. Each area of damage is photographed, and the report is yours to pass on. The claim decision rests with your insurer. We’re frequently asked to look into roofs hit by falling trees and water coming in after the storm, across flat roofs, chimney stacks and gutters and fascias.

Roofs in small places like Farnham often stand in the open, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.

After the visit, you get a photo-illustrated written report, sent by email. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

How it works

Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect what can be seen safely, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. The survey usually takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. In a small place like Farnham, access is usually the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
  2. The roof is inspected from safe positions.
  3. We record and photograph the damage.
  4. We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Before the survey

  • Leave a clear route to the loft

Advice

Different roofs, different checks

Flat roof coverings

On flat roofs, storms can lift edges and tear membranes. Damage is photographed and described.

Clay and concrete tiles

Tiles can lift, crack or blow off in high winds. We record which are damaged and where.

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Farnham

Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. Historic houses like Much Hadham Palace, about 4.2 miles south-west, show how far back building in the area around Farnham goes. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

If you let a flat or house near Stansted Mountfitchet station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. If you look after a building such as Farnham Church of England Primary School, tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.

Farnham is about 2 miles north of Bishop's Stortford, in Hertfordshire. Anywhere in Farnham, we can come and survey your property, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday. Across Hertfordshire, we cover Farnham. There is also a page for Chelmsford.

Prices for storm damage roof reports in Farnham

We confirm the exact price before booking. This is what makes a difference:

  • The roof’s overall size
  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone

Prices start from £150, with VAT included, for a Basic Survey. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400, both with VAT included. We confirm the price for your roof before you book.

Helping us price your survey

There’s no need for technical words. Just tell us:

  • How the loft is reached, if there is one
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • The property’s address and postcode

When you’re ready to go ahead, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form. We will suggest a package, agree the price and find a date.

Farnham questions

Is my home in Farnham listed or in a conservation area?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Is Farnham in the area you cover?

Yes, Farnham is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Farnham as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Tell us which days suit you as you book.

Do you look in the roof space?

Normally, if there’s one and it can be reached safely. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that can’t be seen from outside.

Can you tell me if my claim will be paid?

The decision is your insurer’s, not ours. Our report records what is damaged, with photos, and the likely cause, for you to give to your insurer.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We check the parts we are given access to.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Farnham

Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on.

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps with budgets and planning.

When to book a survey in Farnham

Gusts work at anything on a roof that is loose or exposed. Rain can then blow in where slates or tiles have gone. People normally call us after a storm, once they’ve noticed damage or a leak.

Signs worth acting on include:

  • Slates and tiles blown off the roof
  • New damp or leaks inside
  • Broken or displaced guttering
  • Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St Mary the Virgin, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.
