Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Thorncross

The Financial Ombudsman looks at three things when it considers a storm damage complaint: were there storm conditions on or around the date, is the damage consistent with a storm, and was the storm the main cause. Our report focuses on the second and third points. You or your insurer can check the weather for the date. Common reasons to book are gaps where slates or tiles have gone and loose or torn flashings, on gutters and fascias, flashings and ridges and hips.

Many homes in small places like Thorncross face open ground, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A record with photos is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.

What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, for example when you want to check whether anything has changed.

What we look for on each type of roof

Clay and concrete tiles

Tiles without fixings can move more easily in wind. We record what we can see of the fixings.

Lead flashings

Lifted flashings let rain run behind them into the roof. The report records the flashing and any damp inside.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Thorncross

Is the coastal weather around Thorncross hard on roofs?

Generally, yes: wind and salt air take more of a toll near the sea. Ridges, verges, flashings and fixings are where it typically shows, and Thorncross is within about 1 mile of the coast.

Do you cover smaller places like Thorncross?

Yes. Thorncross is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

How many surveys have you done?

We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs.

Are you loss adjusters?

No. We aren’t loss adjusters and don’t act for you with the insurer. We provide an independent record of the roof, which you can pass to your insurer.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To find a day that suits you, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Does someone need to be in?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We will talk about access when booking.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Thorncross

Thorncross is within about 1 mile of the coast, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. In a coastal gale, rain is driven sideways into laps, verges and flashings, while salt slowly corrodes metal fixings and flashings. A number of the island’s villages keep thatched roofs on older buildings, and the whole island is open to sea air and wind. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in.

With Wolverton Manor about 1 mile north-east, the area around Thorncross has a long history. Older roofs in the area may have lead flashings, valleys and gutters that have been patched many times. Anyone responsible for a site like Brighstone Church of England Aided Primary School will know that water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot. Take an older house close to St. Mary's Church: lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Thorncross

Any of our surveys can be booked by landlords, agents and building managers in Thorncross. For a price for a let property or a block, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when booking and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.

What we do, step by step

We don’t take risks to get a closer look. We inspect whatever is safely visible, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. Most visits take between one and two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Somewhere like Thorncross needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. You receive the written report with photographs.

Before the survey

  • Tell us where we can park nearby
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Make sure the loft hatch can be reached

Arrange a survey

Photos help, if you have them. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine, and please do not climb up for a closer look. To send them or to book, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Thorncross

Knowing whether older wear played a part helps you understand your position. We record storm damage and older defects, so there are no surprises later. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Thorncross, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

There are three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you need to know.

Why book with us

  • PI and public liability insurance
  • Thermal imaging and drone inspection where they help
  • 20+ years’ experience
  • A written report with photos

DIY checks: what’s safe

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
