Storm damage roof report in Shorwell
Most policies do not cover wear and tear. That makes the difference between storm damage and old wear important. Our report records both: fresh breaks and recently moved slates or tiles, and older problems such as corroded nails or worn mortar. We describe what we see, whichever way it points. How the policy applies is for your insurer to decide. We survey chimney stacks, flat roofs and gutters and fascias, and common reasons people get in touch are flat roof edges peeled back and flashings pulled away from walls or stacks.
Being in a small place like Shorwell makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: the journey and access are just planned in advance. It helps to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, along with any repairs done before. Photos of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Can I check my roof myself?
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Why act early in Shorwell
Leaving storm damage can let water into the roof space and rooms below. That can add to the damage and make it harder to separate from the storm. Emergency temporary protection should be arranged with a roofer. In a place like Shorwell, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

FAQs for Shorwell
Is Shorwell within the area you cover?
Yes, Shorwell is covered. We work right across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.
Is my home in Shorwell listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?
Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Let us know which days suit you when booking.
Does someone need to be in?
Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Are you loss adjusters?
No. We are not loss adjusters and don’t act for you with the insurer. We provide an independent record of the roof for you to send to your insurer.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, so it’s not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
How long does the survey take?
It normally takes between one and two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. We will confirm the timing when booking.
How the survey changes by roof type
Ridge and hip tiles
Worn mortar under ridge tiles can let them lift in a storm. We note whether the mortar looks recently broken or long worn.
Slate roofs
Natural slate can last 100 years or more, but the nails often fail first. We look at whether slipped slates suggest storm damage, older wear or both.
What happens on the day
We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. In total, it takes an hour or two for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Older roofs in small places like Shorwell can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it is safe.
- You tell us when the storm was and what damage you’ve seen.
- The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows and from the roof space where it’s safe.
- The damage is recorded with photographs, area by area.
- The likely cause is recorded, along with any evidence of older wear.
- The findings are written up with photos for you to share with your insurer.
Before the survey
- If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
