Thermal Roof Survey in Shorwell
We take a careful look at the roof at your property in Shorwell, and put it all in a written report with photographs.
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
- Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Shorwell
Wet insulation under a flat roof covering holds heat for longer than dry. So a wet patch can show as a warmer or cooler area on the camera. This can give an idea of how far water has travelled beneath the membrane, which is hard to judge by eye. We then check those areas with moisture readings. We survey flat roofs, loft conversions and ceilings below the roof, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering and cold spots on ceilings under the roof.
Villages like Shorwell often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent.

Practical tips
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:
- Keep the report to compare against after any repair
- Don’t switch the heating off before the visit
- Check from the ground or a window, never by climbing
- Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
After the visit, we put the thermal images, photos and moisture readings into one report. We explain what each image may mean, alongside what we recommend. Premium reports are sent the same day.
Keep an eye on ceilings under the roof for new stains. Catching a leak early stops insulation getting soaked.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, from shops and offices to industrial units. Larger roofs take longer.
Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on.
What you can safely check yourself
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
How it works
The aim of the visit is simple: to see as much of the roof as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Cottages and farmhouses around Shorwell often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
- We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
- Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
- You get a report with thermal images, photos and our recommendations.

What a thermal roof survey looks like in Shorwell
Shorwell is within about 3 miles of the coast. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. A number of the island’s villages keep thatched roofs on older buildings, and the whole island is open to sea air and wind. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.
With Northcourt Manor about 0.3 miles north, the area around Shorwell has a long history. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey by drone or thermal camera does not touch the roof itself. The streets around a church such as St. Peter's Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
Every price we give includes VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Yes, we do. We work right across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it is useful to know about access.
Do you cover Shorwell?
Yes, Shorwell is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Shorwell as anywhere else.
How many surveys have you done?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
Does someone need to be in?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that ahead of time, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Which survey includes thermal imaging?
It comes with our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. That also includes a full inspection, a drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and a same-day report.
What do I do with the report?
You will get the report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
