Wethersfield questions

Is Wethersfield within the area you cover?

Yes, Wethersfield is covered. Our area covers London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Wethersfield?

Yes, Wethersfield is within the area we cover. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Just call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and let us know about the property.

Can I challenge a declined storm claim?

The first step is a complaint to your insurer. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. An independent report can add to your evidence, though we cannot predict the outcome.

Will my insurer pay for an old roof?

Insurers usually exclude wear and tear. We describe what looks like fresh storm damage and what looks older. The claim decision is your insurer’s.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.

Can I check the roof after a storm?

Safely, from the ground or a window. Don’t use a ladder or go onto the roof. With binoculars, you can see a lot from the ground and we’ll inspect the rest from safe positions.

What does a storm damage report cost?

Storm damage roof report starts from £150, including VAT. Larger or more complex roofs are quoted for their size. Repair costs are not included, so ask a roofer to quote.

Storm damage roof report in Wethersfield: what you get

Storms tend to find the weak points on a roof. Slates and tiles slip or blow off, ridge and hip tiles lift, flashings pull away and flat roof coverings can tear. Trees and branches can also hit roofs in a storm. Our report records what has happened to your roof, with photos. Where we also see signs of older wear, the report records that too. We survey chimney stacks, slate and tile slopes and flashings, and people most often book us about damaged flat roof membrane and flashings pulled away from walls or stacks.

For a small place like Wethersfield, the inspection is the same as anywhere: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. It helps to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, along with any repairs done before. Photographs of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.

Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

The survey, step by step

The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photographs go into the written report. It normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Older rural homes like those around Wethersfield can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.

  1. First you give us the date of the storm and what you’ve noticed, inside and out.
  2. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows and from the loft space where it is safe.
  3. The damage is recorded with photos, area by area.
  4. We check whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
  5. The findings are written up with photographs for you to share with your insurer.

Getting ready for the survey

What a survey costs

All our prices include VAT. What changes the price is:

  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • Which survey package you book
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • How big the roof is

A Basic Survey starts from £150, including VAT. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400. You will know the exact price before booking.

Getting in touch

The more you tell us, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, it is useful to mention:

  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access

Getting a price is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and give us some details about the property and we will explain which survey suits. The price is agreed up front.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Wethersfield

Knowing whether older wear played a part helps you understand your position. Our report gives an honest view of both, so there are no surprises later. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, from £400 including VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you want to find out.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Wethersfield

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, with the most urgent items set out first.

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps when budgeting.

Wethersfield roofs and the weather

Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, and plenty of post-war and modern estates besides. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed. Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it’s listed or in a conservation area. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas.

The streets around a church like United Reformed Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks. For any home in Wethersfield, it’s the small, early fault that is cheapest to put right.

Roof by roof

Slate roofs

Broken slates and slates that have slid out of place are common after a storm. Each area is photographed and described.

Clay and concrete tiles

Older tiles held only by nibs, without nails or clips, can lift more easily. We note what we can see of how tiles are fixed.

When you need someone else

A survey is a close look at the roof, but it cannot do everything. The main limits are:

  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer
  • Areas we cannot see safely
  • Your insurer’s view of the claim

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and does not.
