What this survey can’t tell you

Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Damage hidden under coverings or inside the structure, without opening up
  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim
  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs
  • Flashings
  • Ridges and hips
  • Gutters and fascias

About our storm damage roof report in Yarmouth

After a storm, it is useful to have a clear record of what happened to your roof. Our report shows the damage in photos and says whether it looks like storm damage, wear and tear, or a mix. We’re not loss adjusters and cannot tell you if your claim will succeed. What you get is an independent view of the roof’s condition. Common reasons to book are damage from fallen branches or debris and lead lifted at abutments, across ridges and hips, flat roofs and slate and tile slopes.

Being in a small place like Yarmouth makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: the journey and access are just planned in advance. It helps to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, along with any repairs done before. If you have photos of the water coming in, they help as well.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

For landlords and managing agents

Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too, from shops and offices to industrial units. Bigger roofs take more time, so they’re priced to suit.

If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the addresses.

Practical tips

Getting the most from a storm damage roof report starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:

  • Take photos from the ground or a window, never by climbing
  • Keep a note of the date of the storm
  • Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
  • Keep receipts for any emergency work

Once we’ve been, the findings are written up with photos. It covers the damage, its likely cause and any older defects. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.

Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. Branches can hit or scrape the roof in a storm.

Yarmouth: your questions answered

Is Yarmouth within the area you cover?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

Is my home in Yarmouth listed or in a conservation area?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Do you look in the loft space?

If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.

How do I book a survey in Yarmouth?

To book, phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We will confirm the price and agree a day with you.

How should I record storm damage myself?

Stay off the roof. Take photos from ground level or from windows. Record the date and any damage inside as well.

How experienced are you?

Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.

Are you loss adjusters?

No. We’re not loss adjusters, and we do not negotiate claims. We give you an independent report of the damage, which you can pass to your insurer.

Different roofs, different checks

Slate roofs

Slates often outlast the nails that hold them. The report records whether slipped slates look like storm damage or older wear.

Clay and concrete tiles

Broken or missing tiles leave the underlay exposed to rain. We photograph each gap.

What happens on the day

Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey usually takes an hour or two for most houses; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Somewhere like Yarmouth needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.

  1. First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
  2. We check the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. We record and photograph the damage.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Preparing for the visit

Advice

What happens if roof problems are left?

Before temporary repairs, photograph the damage from ground level if it’s safe. That keeps a record of how it looked. Around Yarmouth, older homes frequently have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Storm damage roof report starts from £150, including VAT.

Storm damage roof reports around Yarmouth

Yarmouth is within about 1 mile of the coast, so storms can arrive with strong gusts off the water. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies, and the insurer decides the claim. With Mottistone Manor about 4.8 miles south-east, Yarmouth sits in an area with a long building history. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

For landlords with property near Lymington Pier station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer right away. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near St. James' Church, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks. Take a building like Yarmouth Church of England Aided Primary School: a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside.
