Thermal roof survey in Ashurst Wood

Thermal imaging can also show where a roof is losing heat. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves often show up as temperature differences. The difference shows most clearly when it is warm inside and cold outside. The report shows the images and explains what they may mean. We do not give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. If you’ve noticed damp around chimneys and parapets and leaks that are hard to trace, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on pitched roof slopes, flat roofs and insulated roof spaces alike.

Villages like Ashurst Wood frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Prices for thermal roof surveys in Ashurst Wood

A few things affect what a survey costs:

  • The size of the roof
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets

We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you’d like to know.

What to tell us when you get in touch

The more you let us know, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, let us know:

  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • The address and postcode of the property
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • Dates you’re working to, like exchange

Do you need a thermal roof survey in Ashurst Wood?

On big commercial and residential flat roofs, thermal imaging helps owners plan. Patterns can point to wet areas and show which parts look sound, so we know where to take moisture readings.

People normally book a survey after spotting something like this:

  • Damp around chimneys and parapets
  • Damp patches with no obvious cause
  • Ceilings that feel colder in places
  • Missing or slipped insulation

Anyone responsible for a site like Ashurst Wood Primary School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

What’s in a roof survey

How the survey changes by roof type

Loft insulation

The difference is clearest when the home is heated and it is cold out. We explain in the report how the conditions on the day affected what we saw.

Single-ply and EPDM roofs

Because these membranes are thin, patterns from below frequently show. Reflections from shiny surfaces can affect readings, which we allow for.

Ashurst Wood questions

Do you carry out roof surveys in Ashurst Wood?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Is Ashurst Wood within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, like cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them.

Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?

It can show temperature patterns that point to missing or thin insulation. It shows most clearly when it is warm inside and cold outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.

How does a thermal imaging roof survey work?

It records surface temperature across the roof. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, and we check them with moisture readings.

Can you do a thermal survey in any weather?

The weather makes a real difference. A sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air all help. Rain, wind and heavy cloud can weaken the patterns, so we talk through the forecast when you book.

What insurance do you have?

Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

Checking the roof from the ground

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

How the survey works

On the day, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you’d like to know. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely, from ground level, from windows, in the loft space and by drone where it applies. The survey normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Around Ashurst Wood, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can be seen safely.
  3. A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
  4. Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
  5. We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Tell us where we can park nearby
  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors

Airspace, weather and Ashurst Wood roofs

Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up aerial photos and thermal images help. With Hammerwood Park about 1.9 miles north-east, Ashurst Wood sits in an area with a long building history. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near St Dunstan, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Honest limits

A survey is a close look at the roof, but it can’t do everything. The main limits are:

  • Proving moisture from the images alone
  • A structural engineer’s assessment
  • Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
