Crook Log Thermal Roof Survey
An experienced roof surveyor for thermal roof surveys in Crook Log. More than 20 years and over 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
DIY checks: what’s safe
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Crook Log
We present each thermal image next to a normal photo of the same area, so it is easy to see which part of the roof each one shows. We explain what each pattern may mean, what the moisture readings found and what we recommend. With a Premium Survey, the report reaches you the same day. You can talk the findings through with us at the in-person consultation. There’s a 12-month follow-up as well. We are often asked to look into leaks that are hard to trace and cold spots on ceilings under the roof, across commercial roofs, loft conversions and insulated roof spaces.
Flying in London takes more checking than most places: restriction zones surround Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas of their own. Every address in Crook Log is checked before any drone flight, and permission is never taken for granted.
Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

What a thermal roof survey does not cover
It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- The condition of timbers we cannot see

Crook Log: your questions answered
Can parking be tricky for a visit in Crook Log?
London parking needs a little planning, so let us know about permits, bays or a driveway when you book. That way the visit can be planned around it.
Is my home in Crook Log listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We fly a sub-250g drone and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.
Can thermal imaging show missing insulation?
It can show temperature patterns that point to missing or thin insulation. It shows most clearly when it’s warm inside and cold outside. We look from the loft as well, where there’s safe access.
Are you insured?
Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?
On pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp patterns. We explain what the images can and cannot tell you, and we check them with a visual inspection and moisture readings.
Are you structural engineers?
No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we’re not structural engineers and do not carry out calculations. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.

Booking your survey
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- The type of building and roof, like pitched or flat
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from ground level or a window. To get started, call 07833 053749 or email us.
How the survey changes by roof type
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Damp at junctions can be hard to see by eye. A careful visual inspection goes alongside the images.
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
On larger commercial single-ply roofs, thermal imaging can help target moisture readings. That makes the survey more focused.
What happens if roof problems are left?
The longer moisture sits in a roof, the more it can affect timbers and finishes below. Surveying sooner gives you more choice about what to do. Many older London roofs have only old felt under the slates, or no underlay at all, so a slipped slate can soon mean water inside. Left unchecked, water soaks into timber and plaster and the damage spreads.
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before you book.

Airspace, weather and Crook Log roofs
If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Historic houses like Red House, about 0.3 miles south-east, show how far back building in the area around Crook Log goes. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
Crook Log is in London, so parking needs planning: a visitor permit or a nearby bay makes the day easier, as a space near the door cannot be promised. Anyone responsible for a site like Crook Log Primary School will know that big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once. Take an older house close to Trinity Baptist Church: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

How the survey works
Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey usually takes an hour or two for most houses, and more on a big or complicated roof. Surveys in Crook Log can be booked for any day of the week. London parking is often by permit or pay-and-display, so it is useful to know what’s near you. A back bedroom window can be the best vantage point for a rear addition, so we may ask to use one.
