Thermal roof survey in Essendon
Thermal imaging is part of our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. It also includes a drone inspection where applicable, a structural analysis and a same-day report. An in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up are included too. To book, just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and what you’ve noticed. For big commercial roofs, we quote on size and access. If you are worried about ceilings that feel colder in places and damp around chimneys and parapets, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
In a small place like Essendon, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

How the survey works
We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take between one and two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. In a hamlet or village like Essendon, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
How to prepare
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Advice
Honest limits
It helps to know what a survey won’t do before booking:
- Insulation values or heat loss calculations
- The condition of timbers we can’t see
- Proving moisture from the images alone
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you before you book. What our survey covers.
What this survey covers
- Commercial roofs
- Pitched roof slopes
- Insulated roof spaces
- Flat roofs
- Loft conversions
- Ceilings below the roof
What we’re asked to look at in Essendon
On big commercial and residential flat roofs, thermal imaging helps owners plan. Patterns can point to wet areas and show which parts look sound, so moisture readings can be targeted.
A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
- Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
Shop and office owners around Howard Centre may find that big, flat commercial roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images help most.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
- Whether VAT is added on top
- What they won’t be able to tell you
- How long the report takes to arrive
Checking the roof from the ground
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
For landlords and managing agents
A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work.
Landlords and letting agents in Essendon book surveys as well as homeowners. A written report with photos gives you a clear record of the roof.
Essendon: your questions answered
Is Essendon within the area you cover?
Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.
Is Essendon in the area you cover?
Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, and Essendon is part of that. Just ring 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the property, and we will talk through which survey suits.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first, with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the survey around it.
How do I book a survey in Essendon?
It is easiest to ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Tell us the address and a little about the roof. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Let us know your preferred days when booking.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but we don’t provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. If one is needed, the report says so.
What conditions are best for thermal imaging?
Conditions on the day have a big effect on what the camera can show. A dry surface, little wind and a sunny spell beforehand help most. We record the conditions in the report, so you know how much weight to give the images.
Drones, thermal imaging and Essendon roofs
If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail.
Take a building like Essendon CofE (VC) Primary School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. Hatfield House lies about 2.4 miles west, so building around Essendon goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey by drone or thermal camera does not touch the roof itself.
Essendon is about 3 miles south-east of Welwyn Garden City, in Hertfordshire. From houses to flats and shops in Essendon, the roof can be surveyed. Essendon is one of the places in Hertfordshire where we work for thermal roof surveys. We also survey roofs in London.
Postcode districts we cover here for thermal roof surveys: AL9. If you need a thermal roof survey at a property on Rectory Close, Church Street and School Lane or anywhere close by, we can help. Further out, we also cover Watford (13 miles south-west), Hemel Hempstead (13 miles west), Stevenage (10 miles north), St Albans (8 miles west), Bishop's Stortford (15 miles north-east) and Welwyn Garden City (3 miles north-west).
Around Essendon
Around Essendon, our work takes us to homes and buildings near The Salisbury Crest Public House, among other places. Essendon’s nearest station is Bayford station, roughly 2.5 miles east. Nearby you’ll also find Queen Elizabeth II Hospital (2 miles north-west) and The Bunker at Hatfield Police Station (3.6 miles west). The countryside around Essendon includes Willowmead.
Why act early in Essendon
For buyers, a thermal survey adds detail that a visual inspection cannot give. Hidden problems found before exchange can be raised with the seller or agent. Older cottages and farmhouses around Essendon can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 inc. VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you want to find out.
