Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Great Hormead
Wet insulation under a flat roof covering holds heat for longer than dry. So a wet patch can show as a warmer or cooler area on the camera. It helps us see how far water may have spread under the covering, which is hard to judge by eye. We then check those areas with moisture readings. If you’ve noticed areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions and ceilings that feel colder in places, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
In a small place like Great Hormead, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys
Survey packages start from £150, inc. VAT. The price for your roof depends on:
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- Building height and the viewpoints available
- Whether it is a home or a commercial building
- How big the roof is
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.
Helping us price your survey
The more you let us know, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, tell us:
- What made you get in touch
- Anything about access we should know
- When you need the report by
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
Booking is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form, let us know about the property and we will point you to the right survey. The price is agreed up front.

Common roof problems in Great Hormead
On big commercial and residential flat roofs, thermal imaging helps owners plan. It can suggest which areas may be wet and which seem dry, so moisture readings can be targeted.
We are often asked to look at:
- Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
- Water that travels before it shows
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
- Cold areas below the roof
The streets around a church like Church of St Nicholas are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Drones, thermal imaging and Great Hormead roofs
Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Hormead Church of England (VA) First School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Great Hormead: your questions answered
Is Great Hormead within the area you cover?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Do you carry out roof surveys in Great Hormead?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and Great Hormead is part of that. Just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know about the property, and we will talk through which survey suits.
Is thermal imaging included in your surveys?
Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. The Premium Survey also covers a full inspection, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and a report on the same day.
What happens next?
The report comes by email, and you decide the next step: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only when it’s safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest.
Can thermal imaging show missing insulation?
It can show temperature patterns that point to missing or thin insulation. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it is colder outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, like cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
What happens on the day
A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. It normally takes between one and two hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. Somewhere as small as Great Hormead, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
- We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can safely be seen.
- Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
- Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
- You get a report with thermal images, photos and our recommendations.

Honest limits
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Confirming water without moisture readings
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

Practical tips
There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:
- Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive
- Use the report as a baseline for later checks
- Do not switch the heating off ahead of the visit
- Check outlets after heavy rain
Once we’ve been, the thermal images, photos and readings go into a single report. Each image is explained in plain words, alongside what we recommend. Premium reports are sent the same day.
After repairs or a new covering, a later survey can confirm things are dry, when the conditions are suitable.
