Thermal roof surveys in Greenham: local notes
Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Steep or complicated roofs are frequently hard to see from the ground, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as The Willows Primary School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once. Shaw House lies about 1.9 miles north, so building around Greenham goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey from above or with a thermal imager does not touch the roof itself.
Greenham is about 1 mile south-east of Newbury, in West Berkshire. Whether the building in Greenham is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed. We cover towns and villages across West Berkshire, large and small. We also survey roofs in Reading.
Thermal roof surveys in RG19 and RG14 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. How a thermal roof survey works in Greenham
Our thermal survey records how the surface temperature varies across your roof. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat escaping. It is important to know that the camera shows temperature, not water, so we check what it shows with moisture readings. It comes as part of our Premium Survey, from £400. Conditions on the day affect the results, and the report explains how. We survey pitched roof slopes, loft conversions and flat roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are gaps in loft insulation and wet insulation beneath the membrane.
Villages like Greenham often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

For landlords and managing agents
Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf. Access is agreed with the tenant in advance.
Letting agents and landlords in Greenham book surveys as well as homeowners. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photographs, useful for planning maintenance.
What you can safely check yourself
You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- Which survey package you book
- Building height and the viewpoints available
Prices quoted always include VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Our price is from £400, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.
Booking your survey
The more you tell us, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, tell us:
- Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
- Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- The property’s address and postcode
You can call us seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays. For a price or to book, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
What we are asked to look at in Greenham
People often book a thermal survey when a damp patch has no obvious cause. Water can travel under a roof covering or along timbers before it shows inside. Temperature patterns can help narrow down where to look.
Here are some of the things we see frequently:
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
- Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
- Cold areas below the roof
The streets around a church such as Church of St Mary are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image.
What to check before booking
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- What insurance they carry
- Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
- How soon the report will arrive
Questions from Greenham
Do you cover Greenham?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Greenham as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
How do I find out if my home in Greenham is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?
It’s a useful tool for tracing leaks, but not the only one. What it shows depends on the weather and the roof. If the source cannot be confirmed, we will say what could help next, such as electronic leak detection.
Do you take photos of the roof?
Yes. The report includes photographs of what we found.
How soon will I get the report?
Each package has its own report time. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline when you book.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. Where a material might contain it, like old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.
How the survey works
Photos are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Older rural homes like those around Greenham can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
Before the survey
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent
- Let us know about parking before the day
Booking a survey
If you are buying, it is useful to book soon after your offer is accepted, so there’s time to use the report before exchange. Otherwise, simply ring 07833 053749 or email us whenever suits you.

Honest limits
A survey is a careful look at the roof, but it can’t do everything. The main limits are:
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
- What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
- Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll point you to the right survey. What our survey covers.
