Thermal imaging roof survey in High Cross, Hertfordshire
Get a clear view of the roof at a property in High Cross from an independent roof surveyor. We visit on weekdays and at weekends.
- Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
What you can safely check yourself
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That part is for a survey.
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
Thermal roof survey in High Cross: what you get
Thermal imaging is often most useful on flat roofs, from small extensions to large commercial roofs. Patterns can suggest where water is trapped under the covering. On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can hide what’s below, so we combine the camera with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access. We survey loft conversions, commercial roofs and insulated roof spaces, and people most often book us about leaks that are hard to trace and damp around roof outlets and upstands.
In a small place like High Cross, open ground can mean strong wind. High wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
The report records the roof as we found it on the day. It is useful straight away, and a good reference for later.

When you need someone else
A survey is a careful look at the roof, but it cannot do everything. Its limits include:
- An energy rating for the building
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.
What we look at
- Flat roofs
- Ceilings below the roof
- Insulated roof spaces
- Loft conversions
- Pitched roof slopes
- Commercial roofs
The survey, step by step
After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a written report with photos, emailed to you. On timing, most surveys take between one and two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. In a small place like High Cross, access is normally the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
- We check the roof from the ground, from windows and from the roof itself where it is safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
- Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
- You get a report with thermal images, photographs and our recommendations.
How to prepare
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed

Advice
Tips from our surveys
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:
- Do not switch the heating off before the visit
- Use the report as a baseline for later checks
- Note where damp appears and after what weather
- Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
Premium Surveys include an in-person consultation, giving you the chance to talk through the images and findings. There’s a 12-month follow-up too.
Clear outlets and gutters regularly, so water does not sit on the roof. The less water sits, the less can find its way beneath.

High Cross: your questions answered
Does a conservation area affect roof work in High Cross?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Will you come out to High Cross?
Yes, High Cross is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?
It often helps show where to look. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. It is used alongside a close inspection and moisture readings because the camera cannot confirm water on its own.
What does the report include?
It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos, and ends with what we recommend. Points are put in order of urgency where relevant.
What happens after the survey?
We email you the written report with photographs and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.
Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?
It can show temperature patterns that point to missing or thin insulation. It shows most clearly when it is warm inside and cold outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.
How long does the survey take?
That depends on the size and shape of the roof; most visits take between one and two hours at a typical home, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. The written report follows by email.
How the survey changes by roof type
Loft insulation
The difference is clearest when the home is heated and it is cold out. We explain in the report how the conditions on the day affected what we saw.
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
Thin membranes can show patterns from the layers beneath. Reflections from shiny surfaces can affect readings, which we allow for.
Why it is worth a survey now in High Cross
If a big flat roof may need replacing, knowing the wet areas first is useful. Thermal imaging, checked with moisture readings, gives a clearer picture before you spend. Around High Cross, older homes often have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before booking.

What a thermal roof survey looks like in High Cross
Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
Historic houses like Much Hadham Palace, about 4.2 miles east, show how far back building around High Cross goes. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey by drone or thermal camera does not touch the roof itself. Take an older house close to Church of St John the Evangelist: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps. If you look after a building like Thundridge Church of England Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
