Thermal roof survey in Hounslow: what you get

Our thermal survey records how the surface temperature varies across your roof. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat escaping. The camera doesn’t see water itself, so we check what it shows with moisture readings. It comes as part of our Premium Survey, from £400. The report also notes the conditions on the day, since they affect what the camera can show. Common reasons to book are leaks that are hard to trace and possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering, across insulated roof spaces, ceilings below the roof and loft conversions.

London’s roofs are frequently hard to see from the street: valley gutters behind parapets, dormers and flat-roofed rear additions. Drone photos and thermal images can show parts of a roof that are hard to reach safely. Weather on the day decides whether it goes ahead, in Hounslow as anywhere. What a thermal image shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Hounslow

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which can make access easier.

Landlords, agents and building managers in Hounslow and across Greater London can book any of our surveys. For a price for a let property or a block, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

How the survey changes by roof type

GRP fibreglass roofs

GRP roofs are laid over timber boards, so trapped moisture can affect the deck. Thermal imaging can suggest where that may be happening.

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Even on pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp. We explain what can and cannot be read from them.

What happens on the day

The visit usually starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the roof space if there is safe access. All told, expect an hour or two for most houses, and more on a big or complicated roof. London terraces rarely offer a view of the whole roof from one spot, so a visit in Hounslow moves between viewpoints: the pavement, upstairs windows, the loft and any safe spot at the back. If other people live in the building, let us know who can let us into the shared parts.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
  5. The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.

Before we arrive

  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

DIY checks: what’s safe

A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Flying and imaging in Hounslow

Historic houses such as Strawberry Hill House, about 4 miles east, show how far back building in the area around Hounslow goes. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters. Hounslow is about 1 mile from the edge of the flight restriction zone around Heathrow Airport. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the exact boundary for the address before flying.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Meadhurst Primary School, big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once. Take an older house close to Church of St Dunstan: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Hounslow is about 1 mile north of Sunbury-on-Thames, in Greater London. Surveys in Hounslow work the same way as everywhere we cover: a proper look at everything that’s safely in view, photos and a clear written report. Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Hounslow

Once a leak has been fixed, people often ask whether the roof is still wet. Thermal images and moisture readings can suggest whether moisture is still trapped when the conditions on the day are suitable.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
  • Moisture around outlets and upstands
  • Gaps in loft insulation
  • Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions

If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near Treaty Centre, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it.

Questions from Hounslow

Is my home in Hounslow listed or in a conservation area?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Is drone flying allowed in Hounslow?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. The flight restriction zone around Heathrow Airport comes within about 1 mile of Hounslow. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather, though the rest of the survey goes ahead either way.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Not unless it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone.

How long is the visit?

Most surveys take about one to two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. We’ll confirm the timing when you book.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days as you book.

How quickly is the report sent?

It depends on the package: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. The report is emailed to you.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

We’re covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.

Tips that help

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Note where damp appears and after what weather
  • Make sure the loft can be reached safely
  • Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
  • Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected

The report explains the conditions on the day and how they affected the images. That way you know how much weight to give each finding.

Make sure loft insulation covers the whole area and hasn’t been disturbed. Insulation is frequently moved when people work in the roof space.
