Roof surveys for homes and businesses in Hounslow

A roof survey tells you what condition your roof is in, before small faults become big ones. Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all checked, along with the loft where it’s safe to get in. You get a photo-illustrated written report and recommendations. Where it helps, we say which items are urgent and which can wait. Common reasons to book are blocked, sagging or leaking gutters and standing water on a flat roof, on clay and concrete tiles, natural slate and the roof space.

Much of London’s housing is flats, in converted houses or purpose-built blocks, where the roof is normally a shared part of the building. Landlords, managing agents and residents’ companies need to know what condition it’s in and what work is coming up. A defect on a shared roof can reach more than one flat. A report gives everyone the same picture to plan from, with photographs.

It is not only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

How the survey changes by roof type

Flat roof coverings

Repeated coatings can hide what’s underneath. We say what we can see and when a closer look would need opening up.

Natural slate

Inside the loft space, we check what’s under the slates. There may be old felt underlay, or none at all on very old roofs.

What a roof survey looks like in Hounslow

The wider area around Hounslow has a long history of building, with Strawberry Hill House about 4 miles east. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Alongside Victorian and Edwardian terraces, outer London has a great many interwar semis, often with hipped roofs of clay or concrete tiles. Hips, bay roofs and later loft conversions are typical of those semis, if your home is one of them. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.

Trees in and around Sunbury Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. If you run a business near Treaty Centre, a written record of the roof’s condition helps you plan maintenance rather than react to leaks.

Questions from Hounslow

Is drone flying allowed in Hounslow?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. The flight restriction zone around Heathrow Airport comes within about 1 mile of Hounslow. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and the rest of the survey does not depend on the drone.

How do I find out if my home in Hounslow is listed?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Let us know which days suit you as you book.

Can you inspect a terraced or semi-detached roof?

Yes, we can. We inspect what the owner gives us access to. Where a defect looks to be on the neighbour’s side, the report says so.

Do you cover Hounslow?

Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, Hounslow included.

Do you need to get into the loft?

Usually, if there’s one and it can be reached safely. From inside, the underside of the roof frequently shows damp, staining or daylight that can’t be seen from outside.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.

What we can’t see

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • A promise that the roof will not leak in future
  • Whether materials contain asbestos (that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor)
  • A structural engineer’s report

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before booking. What our survey covers.

What happens on the day

There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we will get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes about 1–2 hours for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. For a visit in Hounslow, parking and access are the things to plan: let us know about permits, visitor bays or off-street space, which floor the property is on and how to get into the loft. We then look at what can safely be seen from ground level, windows, the loft and, where it’s safe, the roof itself.

  1. You let us know the address, the type of roof and what’s worrying you.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends if that suits you.
  3. Outside, we inspect from the ground, windows and other safe vantage points, and from the roof where safe.
  4. We then look in the loft for damp, staining and the condition of the underlay.
  5. We email a photo-illustrated written report and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
  • Let us know about parking near the property

DIY checks: what’s safe

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Why act early in Hounslow

Roof faults rarely stay the same size. One slipped slate lets water reach the battens and underlay, and wet timber starts to decay. Catching it early means less to put right. In Hounslow, as across London, an overflowing gutter soaks the wall below, which can lead to damp inside. A small blockage left for a few winters becomes a damp problem.

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. You will know the figure before booking.

What we are asked to look at in Hounslow

Flashings seal the joints where a roof meets a wall or chimney. Lead can crack, lift or slip with age, and mortar fillets crack. Missing lead isn’t unusual either, as thieves target it.

Things that often lead to a survey include:

  • Condensation or damp timbers in the loft
  • Ponding, splits or blisters on flat roofs
  • Loose ridge or hip tiles
  • Blocked, sagging or leaking gutters

If you let a flat or house near Sunbury station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.
