Chimney survey in Hounslow: what you get
Chimney stacks take more weather than almost any other part of a house. Over the years, the flaunching cracks, the pointing wears and flashings lift. That lets water into the brickwork, which can show up as damp on a chimney breast or in the loft space. A survey finds these problems and records them with photographs. Common reasons to book are a stack that appears to lean and worn or missing pointing, on brick chimney stacks, flaunching and shared and party-wall stacks.
A London butterfly roof slopes down to a central valley gutter that drains to the back of the house. From the street you see only a parapet wall, so blocked outlets and split linings go unnoticed until water comes through a ceiling. If your home in Hounslow has one, it needs checking from somewhere that can actually see it.
Where we cannot see part of the chimney stack, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

Different roofs, different checks
Brick stacks
Brick stacks rely on sound pointing to keep water out. We check the bricks for spalling and the joints for erosion.
Lead flashings
Lead flashings seal the joint between the stack and the roof. The survey looks at whether the lead is tight, sound and well fixed.
When you need someone else
It is a careful look at the chimney stack, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- Whether a stack needs rebuilding on structural grounds
- Parts of the stack that cannot be seen safely or belong to a neighbour we cannot access
- Gas safety checks, which need a Gas Safe registered engineer
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you before you book. What our survey covers.
Roof types and parts we check
- Shared and party-wall stacks
- Brick chimney stacks
- Flaunching
- Chimney breasts
- Lead flashings
- Chimney pots and cowls
Can I check my roof myself?
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

What else we do in Hounslow
The survey, step by step
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes about 1–2 hours at a typical home, and longer for a large or complex roof. You’re welcome to ask questions while we are there. Surveys in Hounslow can be booked for any day of the week. London parking is often by permit or pay-and-display, so it helps to know what’s near you. Upstairs rooms at the back are useful too, as they often give the best view of a rear addition.
- We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- Each stack is inspected from safe positions outside.
- We photograph and record the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there is access.
- The report, with photos and recommendations, is emailed to you.
Getting ready for the survey
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Note where any stains or damp appear
Getting a price
We survey roofs seven days a week. To find a date that works for you, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and the days you’d prefer.
Advice
Signs you need a chimney survey in Hounslow
Many chimneys are no longer used. If a stack is capped or blocked without ventilation, moisture can build up inside. That can lead to damp patches on chimney breasts, even with the roof in good order.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Mortar washing out of the joints
- Disused chimneys trapping moisture
- Staining on walls around the chimney
- Pots or cowls that look unsafe
The streets around a church like Church of St Dunstan are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.

Hounslow questions
How do I find out if my home in Hounslow is listed?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
I let a flat near Sunbury station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and some details, including who will give access on the day.
Do you use drones?
Yes, where it is applicable. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.
How many surveys have you done?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If there’s a loft and safe access to it, yes. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.
Do you inspect shared chimneys?
Yes. We look at the parts we can see safely and the parts you can give us access to. If a defect seems to be on your neighbour’s side, the report records it and you can raise it with them.
Will I get photos?
Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible.
Practical tips
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:
- Check that disused chimneys can still breathe
- Keep track of stains on chimney breasts
- Check your stacks from ground level after strong winds
- Do not use a ladder to reach the stack yourself
Questions about the findings are always welcome. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.
Check your stacks from the street or garden after a storm. With binoculars, you can often see cracked flaunching or lifted lead.
Local roofs in Hounslow
In outer London, interwar semis with hipped, tiled roofs sit alongside older slate-roofed terraces. Bay roofs, hip ridges and dormers from later loft conversions are the details that set these houses apart. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. With Strawberry Hill House about 4 miles east, Hounslow sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years.
If you live near a park such as Sunbury Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Treaty Centre, a roof report helps plan work around trading rather than after a leak.
