Thermal imaging roof survey in Knightwood, Hampshire
We carry out thermal roof surveys in Knightwood and the rest of Hampshire. Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends.
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
- Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
- Water that travels before it shows
What we’re asked to look at in Knightwood
After a long-running leak, insulation under a flat roof can stay wet. Owners want to know how far it has spread before deciding what to do. Thermal images and moisture readings together can show the likely extent.
Common reasons to book include:
- Leaks far from where the stain appears
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
- Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
For an older house near a landmark such as St Francis, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.
Questions to ask before you book
- What the survey will not cover
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
- Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one
- When you will get the report
How a thermal roof survey works in Knightwood
Thermal imaging is useful when a damp patch has no clear cause. Water can travel some distance under a roof covering before it shows inside, and the camera can show patterns that help us follow it. We combine the images with a visual inspection and moisture readings, so the findings do not rely on the camera alone. We survey flat roofs, insulated roof spaces and pitched roof slopes, and people most frequently book us about wet insulation beneath the membrane and damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys.
Places like Knightwood can be near small airfields or other airspace restrictions, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any flight. Exposed sites can be windy, and a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind. Each flight is planned with neighbours’ privacy in mind, as well as the airspace and the wind.
Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

The survey, step by step
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes between one and two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. In a smaller place like Knightwood, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. Low roofs on bungalows can often be seen well from ground level, and the loft shows the rest, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where it applies.
- First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
- We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
- We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there’s safe access.
- The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.
How to prepare
- Keep pets in another room
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we are coming

Advice
Different roofs, different checks
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Water often gets in where roofs meet walls, parapets or valley gutters. Thermal imaging can help show damp patterns around them.
Pitched slate and tile roofs
Slate and tile roofs are often harder to read with a thermal camera, because of the air space beneath. We back up what the camera shows with a look in the loft where we can.
What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover
A survey is a close look at the roof, but it can’t do everything. The main limits are:
- What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- A formal energy assessment
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you. The full list of what we check.
Roof types and parts we check
- Commercial roofs
- Loft conversions
- Pitched roof slopes
- Insulated roof spaces
- Flat roofs
- Ceilings below the roof
Can I check my roof myself?
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
Drones, thermal imaging and Knightwood roofs
A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail. About 3.7 miles south lies South Stoneham House, a reminder of how long the area around Knightwood has been built on. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
Take a building like Knightwood Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Knightwood
Do you cover smaller places like Knightwood?
Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
How do I find out if my home in Knightwood is listed?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Let us know your preferred days as you book.
What will the report tell me?
A report with photographs, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations, in order of urgency where relevant. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.
Can a thermal survey trace a roof leak?
It often helps show where to look. Patterns can suggest where trapped water has spread. We combine it with a visual inspection and moisture readings because the camera can’t confirm water on its own.
How experienced are you?
We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
