Thermal roof surveys near Matching

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Matching

We present each thermal image next to a normal photo of the same area, making it clear where on the roof each pattern is. Each one comes with an explanation, the moisture readings and our recommendation. With a Premium Survey, the report reaches you the same day. If you have questions, the in-person consultation gives you time to go through them. There’s a 12-month follow-up as well. Common reasons to book are damp patches with no obvious cause and damp around chimneys and parapets, on flat roofs, insulated roof spaces and commercial roofs.

Somewhere as small as Matching, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from ground level. Weather and airspace are looked at before the visit, and the journey is planned beforehand. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent.

Airspace, weather and Matching roofs

Barrington Hall, about 4.1 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Matching. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. In Essex, older buildings are often clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, alongside plenty of post-war and newer estates. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

Matching is about 4 miles east of Harlow, in Essex. Whether the building in Matching is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed. Our Essex coverage includes Matching and the places around it. There is also a page for Chelmsford.

Do you need a thermal roof survey in Matching?

People often book a thermal survey when a damp patch has no obvious cause. A leak may start well away from where the stain appears. Temperature patterns can help narrow down where to look.

Typical things we are asked to look at include:

  • Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
  • Wet insulation beneath the membrane
  • Wet areas near outlets and upstands
  • Gaps in loft insulation

If you live in an older home near Parish Church of St Mary, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

What to check before booking

  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
  • What exactly goes into their report
  • What follow-up you get after the report

What’s in a roof survey

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed in advance. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which can make access easier.

Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when you book and we will plan the survey around it.

What this survey can’t tell you

Before booking, it is worth knowing what a survey will not do:

  • A formal energy assessment
  • Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
  • Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll point you to the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

Roofs we survey in Matching

  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Flat roofs
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Loft conversions
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Commercial roofs

What we look for on each type of roof

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Thermal images of a pitched roof can still show heat loss patterns and some damp areas. We explain what can and cannot be read from them.

GRP fibreglass roofs

Water under a GRP roof can reach the timber deck. Thermal imaging can suggest where that may be happening.

What you can safely check yourself

A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

The survey, step by step

We will ask a few questions first, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes about one to two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. In a hamlet or village like Matching, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Make sure we can get to the back of the property
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed

Matching questions

Do you cover smaller places like Matching?

Yes. Matching is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

How do I find out if my home in Matching is listed?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.

What will the report tell me?

A report with photos, covering the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend, with the most urgent first where relevant. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.

What insurance do you have?

Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Where it’s applicable and safe, yes. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.

What conditions are best for thermal imaging?

The weather makes a real difference. It works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind. Rain, wind and heavy cloud can weaken the patterns, so we talk through the forecast when booking.
