Thermal roof surveys in Nash Street

About our thermal roof survey in Nash Street

Wet insulation under a flat roof covering holds heat for longer than dry. So a wet patch can show as a warmer or cooler area on the camera. It helps us see how far water may have spread under the covering, something you can’t typically tell from the surface. We then check those areas with moisture readings. We survey commercial roofs, flat roofs and ceilings below the roof, and the problems we are asked to look at most are water that travels before it shows and damp patches with no obvious cause.

Somewhere as small as Nash Street, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from the ground. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned beforehand. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

Nash Street questions

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Nash Street?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

Is Nash Street within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

What insurance do you have?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and details are available on request.

Do you take photos of the roof?

Yes. The report includes photos of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. Where a material might contain it, like old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where it applies and safe. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.

How does a thermal imaging roof survey work?

The images show how warm or cool each part of the surface is. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, which we then check with moisture readings.

What we can’t see

Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Bear these in mind:

  • Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
  • Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
  • A formal energy assessment

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Loft conversions
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Commercial roofs
  • Flat roofs
  • Pitched roof slopes

The survey, step by step

Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes between one and two hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. If you have questions on the day, just ask. In a hamlet or village like Nash Street, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.

Before we arrive

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch

How the survey changes by roof type

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Parapet and valley gutters can overflow inside a building. We use the camera and moisture readings to help follow it.

Loft insulation

The difference is clearest when the home is heated and it is cold out. We explain in the report how the conditions on the day affected what we saw.

Tips from our surveys

Getting the most from a thermal roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:

  • Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive
  • Tell us where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
  • Check outlets after heavy rain
  • Do not climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself

Once we have been, the thermal images, photos and readings go into a single report. We explain what each image may mean, alongside what we recommend. Premium reports are sent the same day.

Check loft insulation covers the whole area and hasn’t been disturbed. Insulation is often moved when people work in the roof space.

Thermal roof surveys in Nash Street: local notes

Nash Street lies within about 5 miles of the sea, and wind off the sea can be strong. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. Older houses across Kent often have handmade clay or peg tiles, and many have tile-hung walls. Oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of the county’s older buildings too. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail.

Take a building like Istead Rise Primary School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. If you live in an older home near Church of St Mildred, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps. Historic houses like Cobham College, about 1.8 miles east, show how far back building around Nash Street goes. For older roofs nearby, a look from above or with a thermal imager is a hands-off way to check condition.
