Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Newtown
A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated areas can stand out on the images. The difference shows most clearly when it’s warm inside and cold outside. Our report points out what the images suggest and where to look more closely. We don’t give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. Typical surveys look at cold areas below the roof and gaps in loft insulation, on ceilings below the roof, loft conversions and insulated roof spaces.
Some older homes in villages like Newtown are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, each with a short note and a photo. You will see the good as well as the bad.

What we cannot see
A survey is a careful look at the roof, but it cannot do everything. The main limits are:
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
- Confirming water without moisture readings
- A formal energy assessment

Roof types and parts we check
- Insulated roof spaces
- Commercial roofs
- Flat roofs
- Loft conversions
- Pitched roof slopes
- Ceilings below the roof
What we look for on each type of roof
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Problems where roof slopes and walls meet are often hidden. A careful visual inspection goes alongside the images.
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Water under felt or asphalt can stay hidden for years. The camera can give clues to where it is sitting, when the conditions allow.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Landlords, agents and building managers in Newtown and across Kent can book any of our surveys. To discuss a property or a block, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too, from shops and offices to industrial units. Larger roofs take longer, so they’re priced to suit.
Do you need a thermal roof survey in Newtown?
People frequently book a thermal survey when a damp patch has no obvious cause. Water can travel under a roof covering or along timbers before it shows inside. Temperature patterns can help narrow down where to look.
These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
- Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
- Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
If you look after a building such as Hever Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

DIY checks: what’s safe
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
How the survey works
We check the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the loft space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey normally takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. For a village or hamlet like Newtown, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there is safe access, in the loft.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
Before we arrive
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- Let us know where we can park nearby
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
