Thermal roof survey in How Green: what you get

A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp isn’t obvious. Leaks frequently run along a roof before they appear on a ceiling, and the camera can show patterns that help us follow it. We combine the images with a visual inspection and moisture readings, so the findings don’t rely on the camera alone. If you are worried about ceilings that feel colder in places and patches of heat loss across the roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

Some older homes in villages like How Green are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Repeated repairs that do not stop a leak are a sign the source hasn’t been traced. Thermal imaging with moisture readings can help narrow it down, rather than more guesswork. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

How Green questions

Is How Green in the area you cover?

Yes, How Green is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in How Green as anywhere else.

Will you come out to How Green?

Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.

How much does a thermal roof survey cost?

It is part of the Premium Survey, from £400. An in-person consultation and a follow-up 12 months later are included too. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size.

What will the report tell me?

You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos. Points are put by urgency where it matters.

Does the report include photographs?

Yes. The report includes photos of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.

How experienced are you?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years, and 98% of clients are satisfied.

Can you do a thermal survey in any weather?

Conditions on the day have a big effect on what the camera can show. Dry, calm weather after some sun gives the best chance of clear images. We record the conditions in the report, so you know how much weight to give the images.

Roof by roof

GRP fibreglass roofs

Water can get through cracked GRP into the deck. We combine a visual check of cracks with the thermal images around them.

Pitched slate and tile roofs

From inside the loft, the camera can help with damp around chimneys, valleys and roof windows. We check any patterns with moisture readings.

Tips that help

Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:

  • Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
  • Talk to us about the weather when booking
  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch
  • Check from ground level or a window, never by climbing

If the images suggest moisture that cannot be confirmed, we’ll say what would help next, like electronic leak detection or opening up a small area.

After repairs or a new covering, a later survey can confirm things are dry, when the conditions are suitable.

The survey, step by step

Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. The whole visit normally takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Rural addresses near How Green can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
  2. We check the roof from the ground, from windows and from the roof itself where it is safe.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
  4. Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
  5. The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.

How to prepare

  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear
  • Tell us where we can park nearby

Thermal roof surveys around How Green

Older houses across Kent often have handmade clay or peg tiles, and many have tile-hung walls. Kent’s older buildings take in oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses as well. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. Hever Castle, about 0.7 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around How Green. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Peter, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Hever Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
