Thermal roof survey in Painter's Forstal

Flat roofs over extensions, garages, flats and commercial buildings are where thermal imaging often helps most. It can show patterns that point to trapped moisture under the membrane. Pitched roofs with slates or tiles are often harder to read, because of the air space beneath, so we also look from the loft where we can reach it safely. We are often asked to look into leaks far from where the stain appears and ceilings that feel colder in places, across pitched roof slopes, commercial roofs and loft conversions.

Some older homes in villages like Painter's Forstal are listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

The report does not just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend.

Airspace, weather and Painter's Forstal roofs

The coast is about 5 miles or less from Painter's Forstal. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

If you look after a building such as Ospringe Church of England Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Peter and St Paul, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. Historic houses like Belmont House and Gardens, about 1.8 miles south, show how far back building around Painter's Forstal goes. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof itself.

What you can safely check yourself

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.

The survey, step by step

Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take an hour or two at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. For a village or hamlet like Painter's Forstal, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
  4. We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
  5. The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.

Preparing for the visit

  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Common questions in Painter's Forstal

Do you cover smaller places like Painter's Forstal?

Yes. Painter's Forstal is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Painter's Forstal?

Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, and Painter's Forstal is part of that. Just call 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the property.

What’s in the survey report?

It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, backed by photographs. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, so you know exactly what was covered.

Will thermal imaging find my leak?

It can help narrow down where water may be getting in. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. It’s used alongside a close inspection and moisture readings because the camera cannot confirm water on its own.

Can thermal imaging show missing insulation?

Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it is colder outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.

How long does the survey take?

Time on site depends on the roof; most visits take an hour or two at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. The written report follows by email.

How we price thermal roof surveys

Prices vary from roof to roof, for these reasons:

  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
  • Whether it is a home or a commercial building
  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium

Every price we give includes VAT. Our price is from £400, including VAT. You will know the price for the job before booking.

What we need to know

These details help when you get in touch:

  • The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date

We confirm the price for the job before booking, so you know where you stand. Prices start from £400, including VAT. To book, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

Practical tips

Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:

  • Check from ground level or a window, never by climbing
  • Check outlets after heavy rain
  • Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
  • Use the report as a baseline for later checks

Many people send the report to roofers, who can then quote for the areas shown. Because the images are paired with photos, it’s easy to find each area on the roof.

Have small defects in the covering fixed early. Water that gets under a covering can spread a long way before it shows.

When you need someone else

It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:

  • Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
  • Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What our survey covers.

What we look at

  • Loft conversions
  • Commercial roofs
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Flat roofs
  • Insulated roof spaces

What we look for on each type of roof

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Slate and tile roofs are frequently harder to read with a thermal camera, because of the air space beneath. We combine the images with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access.

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

Built-up felt and asphalt roofs can hide trapped water for a long time. The camera can give clues to where it is sitting, given suitable conditions on the day.
