Thermal roof surveys in Plaish

What happens if roof problems are left?

The longer moisture sits in a roof, the more it can affect timbers and finishes below. Looking now, while the damage may still be limited, keeps more options open. Around Plaish, older homes often have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before you book.

About our thermal roof survey in Plaish

A thermal survey is not a quick fix for every roof problem. Sun, shade, reflective surfaces and wind can all change what the camera shows. We back up the images with moisture readings and a careful look at the roof. Our report says plainly what the camera picked up and how sure we can be. If a finding can’t be confirmed, the report suggests a next step. We survey insulated roof spaces, commercial roofs and loft conversions, and common reasons people get in touch are ceilings that feel colder in places and areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions.

In a small place like Plaish, open ground can mean strong wind. High wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters. You will see the good as well as the bad.

DIY checks: what’s safe

You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Questions from Plaish

Is Plaish within the area you cover?

Yes, Plaish is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

Is my home in Plaish listed or in a conservation area?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Will you walk on the roof?

Not always. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?

It can show temperature patterns that point to missing or thin insulation. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so the freeholder or managing agent needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we are given access to.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We are a CAA-registered drone operator.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days as you book.

Roof by roof

Pitched slate and tile roofs

From inside the loft, the camera can help with damp around chimneys, valleys and roof windows. Findings are checked with moisture readings.

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Parapet and valley gutters can overflow inside a building. We use the camera and moisture readings to help follow it.

What affects the price in Plaish

Survey packages start from £150, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on:

  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets

Prices start from £150, including VAT, for a Basic Survey. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400, both including VAT. We confirm the price for the job before booking.

What we need to know

We will normally ask about:

  • Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
  • What made you get in touch
  • Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • The kind of building and roof involved

When you’re ready to go ahead, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form. We will suggest a package, agree the price and find a date.

What happens on the day

A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from every safe vantage point, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. It typically takes between one and two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. For a village or hamlet like Plaish, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed
  • Keep pets in another room

What a thermal roof survey looks like in Plaish

Plaish lies within about 5 miles of the sea. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. With Carisbrooke Castle about 0.8 miles north-east, Plaish sits in an area with a long building history. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St. Nicholas in Castro, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. If you look after a building such as St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School, big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.

Plaish is about 2 miles south-west of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. Plaish is part of the area we cover and the surrounding area across London and South East England. Plaish is one of the towns and villages in the Isle of Wight where we work. Portsmouth is in our area too.

We work across the PO30 postcode area for thermal roof surveys and the streets around it. Nearby, we also carry out thermal roof surveys in Bowcombe (1 mile south-west), Clatterford (1 mile north-east), Carisbrooke (1 mile north-east), Gunville (1 mile north) and Gatcombe (2 miles south-east). Within a short drive, we also cover Ryde (8 miles east), Cowes (5 miles north), Sandown (8 miles east), Shanklin (8 miles south-east), Ventnor (8 miles south-east) and East Cowes (5 miles north-east). Tips from our surveys

A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Some pointers:

  • Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
  • Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
  • Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
  • Note where damp appears and after what weather

Once we have been, the thermal images, photos and readings go into a single report. Each image is explained in plain words, with our recommendations. With a Premium Survey, you get the report the same day.

Watch for new damp patches on ceilings beneath the roof. Catching a leak early stops insulation getting soaked.
