DIY checks: what’s safe

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

It helps to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Share it with us as you book and it will help the survey.

Thermal roof survey in Rose Hill

We present each thermal image next to a normal photo of the same area, making it clear where on the roof each pattern is. Each one comes with an explanation, the moisture readings and our recommendation. With a Premium Survey, the report reaches you the same day. If you have questions, the in-person consultation gives you time to go through them. A follow-up 12 months later is included too. If you’ve noticed gaps in loft insulation and patches of heat loss across the roof, we can find out what’s behind it.

Villages like Rose Hill often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, with the urgent items made clear.

Tips that help

You do not need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:

  • Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
  • Check from the ground or a window, never by climbing
  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch
  • Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey

You also get an in-person consultation with a Premium Survey, so you can go through the images with us. There’s a 12-month follow-up too.

Watch for new damp patches on ceilings beneath the roof. Catching a leak early stops insulation getting soaked.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Buyers get extra information from thermal images that the eye can miss. Finding hidden moisture before exchange gives you facts to raise with the seller. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Rose Hill, driving rain gets into any weakness, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, access and which survey you book.

Why book with us

  • Drone and thermal imaging surveys available
  • Package prices that include VAT
  • An independent view of the roof
  • Two decades and more of roof surveys

Rose Hill: your questions answered

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Rose Hill?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Will you come out to Rose Hill?

Yes. Rose Hill is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?

Thermal imaging shows temperature rather than water. Because wet insulation holds heat for longer, it can show as a different temperature, but we check each finding with moisture readings.

How long is the visit?

It usually takes an hour or two at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. The report follows by email.

Will thermal imaging find my leak?

It often helps show where to look. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. It is used alongside a close inspection and moisture readings, as the camera alone can’t prove a leak.

Is thermal imaging included in your surveys?

Our Premium Survey, from £400, includes thermal imaging. An in-person consultation and a follow-up 12 months later are included too. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size.

How it works

There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll get on with the inspection. A typical survey takes between one and two hours at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In a hamlet or village like Rose Hill, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. You tell us about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
  5. The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.

Before we arrive

  • If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

What a good roof survey covers

Thermal roof surveys around Rose Hill

Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs, and oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of East Sussex’s older buildings. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail. If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Ringmer Community College and Sixth Form, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
