Thermal roof survey in Shenfield
A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves often show up as temperature differences. It works best when the building is heated and it is colder outside. Our report points out what the images suggest and where to look more closely. We do not give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. We’re often asked to look into damp around roof outlets and upstands and missing or slipped insulation, across flat roofs, pitched roof slopes and insulated roof spaces.
Even in a smaller place like Shenfield, there may be airfields or restrictions nearby, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any flight. Exposed sites can be windy, and a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind. Neighbours’ privacy is part of planning each flight, along with the airspace and the weather.
What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later.

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Shenfield
Will you come out to Shenfield?
Yes, Shenfield is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Do you cover Shenfield?
Yes. We work right across London and South East England, and Shenfield is part of that. You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and a few details, and we will talk through which survey suits.
When does the report arrive?
Each package has its own report time. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline when you book.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so the building owner or managing agent needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs such as sagging are noted, but we do not provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where it applies and safe. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where applicable.
How the survey works
Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. You’re welcome to ask questions while we are there. Parking around Shenfield is typically easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. Low roofs on bungalows can frequently be seen well from ground level, and the loft shows the rest, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where it applies.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Tips from our surveys
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:
- Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
- File the images with your roof records
- Leave the roof to people with safe access
- Make sure the loft can be reached safely
We note the weather and surface conditions, and how they may have affected the results. That way you know how much weight to give each finding.
Keep an eye on ceilings under the roof for new stains. Catching a leak early stops insulation getting soaked.

What affects the price in Shenfield
We confirm the exact price before booking. This is what makes a difference:
- How big the roof is
- How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages
- Height and safe access
- Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can safely be seen and which survey you book.
What we need to know
To price your survey accurately, we will ask about:
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
Our phone lines are open seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays. To book or ask a question, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Different roofs, different checks
Loft insulation
Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. Thermal images can show where it has been pushed aside.
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
On big single-ply roofs, the camera helps show where to take readings. That makes the survey more focused.
When you need someone else
In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
- Confirming water without moisture readings
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

What a thermal roof survey looks like in Shenfield
Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. Ingatestone Hall, about 3.8 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Shenfield. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
Take an older house close to Church of St Mary the Virgin: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. If you look after a building such as Shenfield St. Mary's Church of England Primary School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.
