Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Sholden
Will you come out to Sholden?
Yes, Sholden is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
Is Sholden in the area you cover?
Yes, Sholden is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We note visible signs such as sagging or deflection, but we don’t carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show.
Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?
It often helps show where to look. Patterns can suggest where trapped water has spread. It is used alongside a close inspection and moisture readings because the camera can’t confirm water on its own.
Will the camera show exactly where the water is?
No, not on its own. It shows temperature, and wet materials often behave differently from dry ones. We confirm what it suggests with moisture readings.
Thermal roof survey in Sholden: what you get
Your report sets out the thermal images alongside ordinary photos, so it is easy to see which part of the roof each one shows. We explain what each pattern may mean, what the moisture readings found and what we recommend. Premium reports are sent the same day. If you have questions, the in-person consultation gives you time to go through them. A follow-up 12 months later is included too. We’re often asked to look into gaps in loft insulation and damp patches with no obvious cause, on insulated roof spaces, commercial roofs and loft conversions.
Somewhere as small as Sholden, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Weather and airspace are looked at ahead of the visit, and the journey is planned in advance. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
The report records the roof as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, for instance when you want to check whether anything has changed.

What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover
A survey is a careful look at the roof, but it cannot do everything. Its limits include:
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
- Insulation values or heat loss calculations
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.

- Flat roofs
Do you need a thermal roof survey in Sholden?
Buyers sometimes want more than a visual look at the roof. A Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where it applies and a same-day report, which helps when timescales are tight.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Damp patches with no obvious cause
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Nicholas, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Thermal roof surveys around Sholden
The coast is about 2 miles or less from Sholden, and coastal wind can be strong. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. There are several hotels within about a mile and a half of Sholden, and like offices and blocks, hotels frequently sit under flat roofs. For hotels and other commercial buildings, large roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once.
If you look after a building such as Sholden Church of England Primary School, big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once. Walmer Castle, about 2 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Sholden. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey from above or with a thermal imager does not touch the roof itself.
Sholden is about 1 mile north-west of Deal, in Kent. We carry out thermal roof surveys in Sholden for houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings, with a written report and photographs every time. Our Kent coverage includes Sholden. There’s also a page for Canterbury.

How the survey works
Every roof is different, but as a rough guide the survey takes between one and two hours at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. If you have questions on the day, just ask. In a hamlet or village like Sholden, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
- The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.

Roof by roof
GRP fibreglass roofs
Water under a GRP roof can reach the timber deck. Thermal imaging can suggest where that may be happening.
Loft insulation
In the loft space, the camera can pick up gaps and thin areas of insulation. We inspect the loft where it can be reached safely.

Why act early in Sholden
Before replacing a large flat roof, it is useful to know how much of it is actually wet. Thermal imaging, checked with moisture readings, gives a clearer picture before you commit. For older village homes like those around Sholden, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
