Thermal imaging roof survey in Spring Vale, Isle of Wight
Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Spring Vale. We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
- Stains that keep coming back
- Water that travels before it shows
- Cold areas below the roof
The survey, step by step
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. All in, the survey usually takes an hour or two for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. In a hamlet or village like Spring Vale, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
Before the survey
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Point out any leaks or damp patches

Thermal roof survey in Spring Vale
On a flat roof, wet insulation holds heat longer than dry insulation. That means a wet area can show up as a different temperature from the rest of the roof. This can give an idea of how far water has travelled beneath the membrane, something you cannot normally tell from the surface. Moisture readings are then used to check what the camera suggests. We survey commercial roofs, flat roofs and pitched roof slopes, and common reasons people get in touch are thin or uneven insulation in the roof and areas of a flat roof that may hold water.
Older buildings in small places like Spring Vale may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Spring Vale
Not every roof problem shows on the surface. Trapped moisture, missing insulation and hidden heat loss are three examples. A thermal camera adds another way of finding them.
Things that often lead to a survey include:
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
- Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Spring Vale means lost rooms as well as repairs, so it pays to find faults before guests do.
Questions to ask before you book
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
- Will the report include photos?
Drones, thermal imaging and Spring Vale roofs
Spring Vale lies within about 1 mile of the sea. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
Nunwell House lies about 3.2 miles south-west, so building around Spring Vale goes back a long way. Photos from the air and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. Take an older house close to St. Peter's Church: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.
Spring Vale is about 2 miles east of Ryde, in the Isle of Wight. We provide thermal roof surveys for homeowners, landlords and businesses in Spring Vale and nearby. Across the Isle of Wight, we cover Spring Vale and the places around it. Portsmouth is in our area too.
We work across PO34 for thermal roof surveys. That includes homes and businesses on Springvale Road and Oakhill Road and the roads around them. Close by, we survey roofs in Puckpool (1 mile west), Pondwell (1 mile south), Seaview (1 mile south-east), Appley (1 mile west) and Nettlestone (1 mile south-east). We also work in nearby towns such as Newport (8 miles west), Cowes (8 miles west), Sandown (5 miles south), Shanklin (7 miles south), Ventnor (10 miles south-west) and East Cowes (7 miles west). For harder-to-reach addresses, the survey takes a little more planning, so let us know when you contact us.

What we cannot see
A survey is a proper look at the roof, but it can’t do everything. The main limits are:
- A formal energy assessment
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
- The condition of timbers we cannot see

What a survey costs
A few things affect what a survey costs:
- Basic, Standard or Premium
- How big the roof is
- How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages
- Building height and the viewpoints available
We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
What to let us know when you contact us

Once you know what you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form. We will suggest a package, agree the price and find a date.
What we look for on each type of roof
Loft insulation
Heat loss shows most clearly when it’s warm inside and colder outside. We explain in the report how the conditions on the day affected what we saw.
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
Single-ply PVC, TPO and EPDM roofs are often laid over insulation boards. If water gets under them, thermal imaging can suggest which boards are wet.
For landlords and managing agents
Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with the freeholder or managing agent. Mention it when you get in touch and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.
Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on.
Questions from Spring Vale
Is my home in Spring Vale listed or in a conservation area?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Is Spring Vale within the area you cover?
Yes, Spring Vale is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Can you do a thermal survey in any weather?
Conditions on the day have a big effect on what the camera can show. A dry surface, little wind and a sunny spell beforehand help most. We record the conditions in the report, so you know how much weight to give the images.
Which survey includes thermal imaging?
It comes with our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. That also includes a full inspection, a drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a same-day report.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. Roofs over flats are frequently shared, so the building owner or managing agent needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you when you book.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We carry out surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To arrange a date, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
