Thermal roof survey in Upper Halling
Thermal imaging is often most useful on flat roofs, from small extensions to large commercial roofs. Patterns can suggest where water is trapped under the covering. Pitched roofs with slates or tiles are often harder to read, because of the air space beneath, so we combine the camera with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access. We survey loft conversions, insulated roof spaces and commercial roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys and damp that repairs haven’t cured.
In a village or hamlet like Upper Halling, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover
In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:
- Proving moisture from the images alone
- What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will suggest the right survey. What our survey covers.
What this survey covers
- Pitched roof slopes
- Commercial roofs
- Ceilings below the roof
- Loft conversions
- Insulated roof spaces
- Flat roofs
How it works
Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings as a photo-illustrated written report, emailed to you. As for time on site, it typically takes an hour or two for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Around Upper Halling, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
How to prepare
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
- Let us know about parking before the day
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
How to book
Our price is from £400, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, and you can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form to find out.

Common questions in Upper Halling
Do you carry out roof surveys in Upper Halling?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and Upper Halling is part of that. You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and some details.
Do you cover smaller places like Upper Halling?
Yes. Upper Halling is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
How experienced are you?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
What’s in the report?
It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, backed by photographs. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too.
How much does a thermal roof survey cost?
Our Premium Survey, from £400, includes thermal imaging. An in-person consultation and a follow-up 12 months later are included too. For bigger commercial roofs, we quote on size.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
Are you structural engineers?
No. We point out what can be seen, like sagging or deflection, but we are not structural engineers and do not carry out calculations. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.
What we look for on each type of roof
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Felt and asphalt sit tight to the layers below, which often helps the camera pick up differences. Any patterns are checked with moisture readings.
Loft insulation
Insulation frequently gets moved during work in the loft. The camera can show where it no longer covers the ceiling.
Thermal roof surveys in Upper Halling: local notes
If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Many older homes in Kent have handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles held by pegs through two holes, and tile-hanging on their upper walls. The county’s older buildings also include oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Halling Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. Take an older house close to Church of St John the Baptist: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. Starkey Castle lies about 1.7 miles north-east, so building around Upper Halling goes back a long way. A drone or thermal survey doesn’t involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings.

Useful tips for Upper Halling property owners
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:
- Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
- Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
- Check outlets after heavy rain
- Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive
The report explains the conditions on the day and how they affected the images. It helps you judge how firm each finding is.
Consider a repeat survey after major work on the roof in suitable weather.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Once insulation under a membrane is wet, it tends to stay wet. In time, it stops insulating properly and can damage the deck. Finding the wet areas sooner keeps the work smaller. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before booking.
