Airspace, weather and Wheeler End roofs
About 1.7 miles north-east lies West Wycombe Park House, a reminder of how long the area around Wheeler End has been built on. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Some villages in Buckinghamshire still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Steep or complicated roofs are frequently hard to see from the ground, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.
Anyone responsible for a site like Lane End Primary School will know that big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once. For an older house near a landmark such as Church of the Holy Trinity, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps. For businesses in and around places such as Eden, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.

About our thermal roof survey in Wheeler End
A thermal imaging roof survey uses a thermal camera to show differences in surface temperature across a roof. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat escaping. The camera does not see water itself, so findings are checked with moisture readings. Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. Conditions on the day affect the results, and the report explains how. If you’re worried about water getting in at parapets and stacks and wet areas near outlets and upstands, we can find out what’s behind it.
Villages like Wheeler End often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, like when you want to compare after future work.

How the survey changes by roof type
Loft insulation
Heat loss shows most clearly when it is warm inside and colder outside. Our report notes how the conditions affected the images.
Pitched slate and tile roofs
On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s happening underneath. We combine the images with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access.
How we price thermal roof surveys
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:
- The size of the roof
- Height and safe access
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- House, block, shop or office
A Basic Survey starts from £150, inc. VAT. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400. You will know the price for your survey before booking.
What we need to know
These details help when you contact us:
- Dates you are working to, like exchange
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- The address and postcode of the property
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
Our phone lines are open seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays. To book or ask a question, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
What a thermal roof survey does not cover
It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:
- Proving moisture from the images alone
- A formal energy assessment
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you before you book. The full list of what we check.

- Ceilings below the roof
The survey, step by step
After the inspection, everything we found is written up in a report with photographs, sent to you by email. As for time on site, most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Rural addresses near Wheeler End can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there is safe access, in the loft.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
Getting ready for the survey
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

Questions from Wheeler End
Is drone flying allowed in Wheeler End?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Wycombe Air Park is about 2 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
How do I find out if my home in Wheeler End is listed?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Can thermal imaging show missing insulation?
Thermal images can suggest where heat is escaping and where insulation may be missing. We do not give energy ratings or heat loss calculations, but the images show where improvements may help.
How quickly is the report sent?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed.
What do I do with the report?
You’ll get the report by email, with photographs and clear recommendations. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation.
What does a thermal roof survey show?
A thermal camera shows differences in surface temperature. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or heat escaping. Findings are checked with moisture readings.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.
Practical tips
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:
- Don’t climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
- Use the report as a baseline for later checks
- Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
- Keep a record of when stains appear
You can pass the report to a roofer so they can see where the problem areas seem to be. Because the images are paired with photos, it is easy to find each area on the roof.
Deal with small splits and lifted seams promptly. Once water gets under a membrane, it can travel far before it appears inside.
