Thermal roof survey in Whempstead
A thermal survey is not a quick fix for every roof problem. It shows surface temperature, and things like sun, shade, reflections and wind all affect the readings. We back up the images with moisture readings and a careful look at the roof. The report is clear about what the images show and what they do not. If a finding can’t be confirmed, the report suggests a next step. Typical surveys look at water getting in at parapets and stacks and water that travels before it shows, on ceilings below the roof, loft conversions and commercial roofs.
In a village or hamlet like Whempstead, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from the ground. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What we look for on each type of roof
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
On big single-ply roofs, the camera helps show where to take readings. That makes the survey more focused.
Loft insulation
From inside the loft, thermal imaging can show gaps in insulation and cold spots. We inspect the loft where it can be reached safely.
What this survey cannot tell you
Every survey has limits, and it’s better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:
- An energy rating for the building
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Proving moisture from the images alone

Why act early in Whempstead
Heat lost through a roof costs money every winter. The camera can point to gaps and thin areas in the insulation, so you know where to put things right. For an older or listed building in a place like Whempstead, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so leaving a defect until it’s urgent leaves less time to plan.
Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we can help you choose.

Whempstead: your questions answered
How do I find out if my home in Whempstead is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Do you cover Whempstead?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Whempstead as anywhere else.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We are roof surveyors, not structural engineers, and it doesn’t include calculations. We’ll recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
How many surveys have you done?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.
What happens next?
We email you the written report with photos and recommendations. It’s yours to share with a seller, insurer, roofer or managing agent, whichever applies.
Can a thermal camera see water?
Thermal imaging shows temperature rather than water. Because wet insulation holds heat for longer, it can show as a different temperature, but we check each finding with moisture readings.
Will the survey show heat loss through my roof?
It can show temperature patterns that point to missing or thin insulation. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it is colder outside. We look from the loft as well, where there’s safe access.
Flying and imaging in Whempstead
Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help. Historic houses such as Aston Bury, about 2.6 miles west, show how far back building in the area around Whempstead goes. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
If you look after a building such as Munden Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. The streets around a church such as Parish Church of All Saints are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

How it works
The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the roof space if there is safe access. All told, expect roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. For a village or hamlet like Whempstead, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
- We look at the roof from the ground, from windows and from the roof itself where it is safe.
- Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
- We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there is safe access.
- We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Whempstead
Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too, including offices, shops and units. Bigger roofs take more time, so they’re priced to suit.
Letting agents frequently book on a landlord’s behalf. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
What you can safely check yourself
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
