Thermal imaging roof survey in Wytham, Oxfordshire
Wondering about the roof at a property in Wytham? We carry out thermal roof surveys in Wytham and across Oxfordshire.
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
- Water that travels before it shows
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
Thermal roof survey in Wytham: what you get
On a flat roof, wet insulation holds heat longer than dry insulation. So a wet patch can show as a warmer or cooler area on the camera. It helps us see how far water may have spread under the covering, something you can’t usually tell from the surface. Moisture readings are then used to check what the camera suggests. If you’ve noticed damp patches with no obvious cause and gaps in loft insulation, we can find out what’s behind it.
In a small place like Wytham, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
The report records the roof as we found it on the day. It’s useful straight away, and a good reference for later, for example when you want to check whether anything has changed.

Before and after the survey
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:
- Note where damp appears and after what weather
- Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
- Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
- Do not climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
You can pass the report to a roofer so they can see where the problem areas seem to be. Each thermal image is matched to a normal photo, so the areas are easy to locate.
Consider a repeat survey after major work on the roof in suitable weather.

Thermal roof surveys around Wytham
Historic houses such as Holywell Manor, about 3.1 miles south-east, show how far back building in the area around Wytham goes. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs. Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
Shop and office owners around Westgate Shopping Centre may find that thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof. If you look after a building such as Oxford Academy, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. The streets around a church like Church of All Saints are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

How the survey changes by roof type
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Water often gets in where roofs meet walls, parapets or valley gutters. The camera can help show damp around these junctions.
GRP fibreglass roofs
Glossy GRP can reflect heat. We allow for reflections and confirm findings with moisture readings.
What a thermal roof survey does not cover
To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:
- The condition of timbers we can’t see
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
- A structural engineer’s assessment
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.

Wytham: your questions answered
Will you come out to Wytham?
Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.
Is Wytham in the area you cover?
Yes, Wytham is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.
How do I book a survey in Wytham?
The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or email us. Let us know the address and a little about the roof, and we’ll recommend the right survey. We survey on any day of the week.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report, and it does not include calculations. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years, and 98% of customers are satisfied.
Does the weather affect a thermal survey?
Conditions on the day affect the results. It works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind. Rain and strong wind can make the images less clear, so we discuss the forecast when booking.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
We carry out surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
DIY checks: what’s safe
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.
The survey, step by step
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, like when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes about one to two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Older roofs in small places like Wytham can have low, tight loft spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.
- You let us know about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.
How to prepare
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
