Alfold Chimney Survey
Get a clear view of the chimney stack at a property in Alfold from an independent roof surveyor. Visits run on weekdays and weekends, in the daytime.

- Frost-damaged brickwork on the stack
- Worn or missing pointing
What a chimney survey doesn’t cover
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- What’s inside the brickwork or behind render, without opening up
- Areas we can’t view from safe positions
- Checks on boilers, fires or their flues
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll point you to the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.

Chimney surveys for homes and businesses in Alfold
A damp patch on a chimney breast doesn’t always come from the same place. It might come in at the top, through worn pointing or porous bricks, or where the flashings meet the roof. Moisture trapped inside a stack with no ventilation can also cause damp. Our survey checks each of these and records the likely cause. You then know where to start. If you’ve noticed cracked or missing flaunching and flashings pulling away from the stack, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
In a village or hamlet like Alfold, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. We report on what can safely be seen, and thatch is a specialist material. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs frequently need the most attention.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Practical tips
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Photograph damp patches with the date
- Look at the chimneys with binoculars after a storm
- Check unused flues are capped with ventilation
- Find out whether changes to a stack need permission
After the visit, we write up the report with photos of each stack. It explains the condition of each part of the stack and any damp inside. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.
Have aerial and dish brackets on the stack checked, and moved if they’re working it loose. Removing unused fixings takes strain off the brickwork.
FAQs for Alfold
Is Alfold in the area you cover?
Yes, Alfold is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.
Will you come out to Alfold?
Yes, we do. We work right across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only if it’s safe. We inspect everything that’s safely in view: from ground level, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We carry out surveys seven days a week. To arrange a date, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
How much does a chimney survey cost in Alfold?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
How long does the survey take?
Most surveys take about one to two hours at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. We will confirm the timing as you book.
What a survey costs
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
- Roof area
- Whether it is a home or a commercial building
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
Prices quoted always include VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Chimney survey starts from £150, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.
What we need to know
Getting the details right at the start saves time. Please include:
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
Not sure which survey you need? It’s easiest to ring 07833 053749 or email us and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We will talk you through the options and what they cost.
How the survey works
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes between one and two hours at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. You’re welcome to ask questions while we’re there. Rural addresses near Alfold can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- You tell us how many stacks there are and any damp or problems you’ve noticed.
- We inspect each stack from safe viewpoints outside.
- We check and photograph the pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
- Inside, we look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there is safe access.
- The findings are written up with photos and recommendations and emailed to you.
Preparing for the visit
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Advice
What a chimney survey looks like in Alfold
Many older homes in Surrey have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area.
If you live in an older home near Church of St Nicholas, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. Living close to Fir Tree Copse is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.

Roof by roof
Chimney pots and cowls
On redundant flues, we check how the pots are capped. Capping without ventilation can trap moisture.
Flaunching
We often find flaunching that has cracked or broken away. Caught early, it is frequently a small job.
