About our chimney survey in Compton
Our chimney survey covers the stack and the details that keep water out around it: pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, bricks and the flashings at the roof line. We also look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there’s safe access. You get a photo-illustrated written report and our recommendations. It suits a single stack on a house as well as several on a larger building. We survey chimney pots and cowls, shared and party-wall stacks and brick chimney stacks, and people most often book us about frost-damaged brickwork on the stack and gaps where the stack meets the roof.
Some older homes in villages like Compton are listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.
We keep jargon out of it: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

The survey, step by step
We’ll ask a few questions first, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. Somewhere like Compton needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- We look at every stack from wherever it can be seen safely.
- We photograph and record the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there is access.
- The report, with photos and recommendations, is emailed to you.
Before the survey
- Let us know about parking near the property
- Check we can get to the back of the property

What you can safely check yourself
It is useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us as you book and it will help the survey.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Your questions about chimney surveys in Compton
Is my home in Compton listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
I let a flat near Rowlands Castle station. Can you check the roof?
Of course. Let us know whether a tenant or an agent will let us in, and we can send the report to you or your agent.
How long is the visit?
Expect it to take roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. You will then get the report by email.
What do you check on a chimney?
Every part of the stack we can see from safe positions: from the pots and flaunching down to the flashings. We also note leaning, redundant stacks and damp inside.
Will I get photos?
Yes. Photos are part of every report.
Why is my chimney breast damp?
It can come from several places: water getting in at the top, through the brickwork or at the flashings, or moisture trapped in a stack with no ventilation. Our survey checks each of these and records the likely cause.
How many surveys have you done?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of customers are satisfied.
Local roofs in Compton
Many older homes in Sussex have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first. About 1.8 miles north lies Uppark, a reminder of how long the area around Compton has been built on. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof.
If you live in an older home near The Parish Church of St Mary, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs. Landlords with a home close to Rowlands Castle station may find that a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak. If you look after a building such as Compton and Up Marden CofE Primary School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

Why get it checked now?
Damp in a chimney breast normally gets worse while the cause is left. It can stain walls and damage plaster. Knowing whether it is the flaunching, flashings, brickwork or ventilation means the right fix can be planned. In a place like Compton, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

Before and after the survey
A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Check that disused chimneys can still breathe
- Use a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas appliances
- Keep track of stains on chimney breasts
- Check your stacks from ground level after strong winds
Many people use the report to get quotes for the work. With the same list in front of each contractor, comparing quotes is simpler.
Have worn pointing and cracked flaunching dealt with early. Small repairs now can save bigger work later.
What we cannot see
Before you book, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:
- Flue inspections or sweeping
- Hidden sides of a shared stack
- Gas safety checks, which need a Gas Safe registered engineer
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will point you to the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.
