Chimney surveys for homes and businesses in Green Cross
A damp patch on a chimney breast does not always come from the same place. Water may be getting in at the top through cracked flaunching or an uncapped pot, through the brickwork, or at the flashings. Condensation inside an unventilated stack is another common cause. Our survey checks each of these and records the likely cause. You then know where to start. If you’ve noticed flashings pulling away from the stack and cracked or missing flaunching, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
In a small place like Green Cross, many roofs stand in the open, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

What we do, step by step
Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. Most visits take about 1–2 hours at a typical home, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Older roofs in small places like Green Cross can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.
- We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- Each stack is inspected from safe positions outside.
- Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there’s access.
- The report, with photos and recommendations, is emailed to you.
Before the survey
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Tell us where we can park nearby
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed

Advice
Tips from our surveys
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Never climb onto the roof to look at a chimney
- Check your stacks from ground level after strong winds
- Photograph damp patches with the date
- Ask for ventilated caps on redundant stacks
After the visit, we write up the report with photographs of each stack. It covers the pots, flaunching, pointing, brickwork and flashings, and any damp we found inside. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
Look at your chimneys from ground level now and then, particularly after strong winds. Binoculars help you spot loose pots, missing mortar or lifted flashings.
Landlords, agents and block managers in Green Cross
Landlords and agents in Green Cross book surveys as well as householders. The report gives you a dated record of the chimney stack, with photos, which helps you plan work between tenancies.
Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too. Larger roofs take longer.
Different roofs, different checks
Rendered stacks
What’s behind the render can’t be seen without removing some, so the report says what can and cannot be judged.
Brick stacks
Brick stacks rely on sound pointing to keep water out. The survey looks for crumbling bricks and worn or missing mortar.

What happens if roof problems are left?
A leaning stack should be looked at sooner rather than later. Our survey records it and says when a structural engineer should look at it, so you can decide what to do next. Around Green Cross, older homes often have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.
Every price we give includes VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Chimney survey starts from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

Your questions about chimney surveys in Green Cross
I let a flat near Haslemere station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and a few details.
Do you cover smaller places like Green Cross?
Yes. Green Cross is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Will I get photos?
Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, which makes the report easy to follow.
What’s the best way to book?
To book, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and tell us the address and what you’d like to know. We’ll confirm the price and agree a day with you.
Do you inspect the flue?
No. A flue inspection, sweep or gas safety check is a separate job. We check the structure and weathering of the stack and any damp, and we will say if anything suggests the flue needs checking.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Where it’s applicable and safe, yes. We are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

Helping us price your survey
There’s no need for technical words. Just tell us:

Local roofs in Green Cross
If your home is older, it’s worth knowing whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls are typical of Surrey’s older houses. A few of Surrey’s oldest buildings have heavy Horsham stone slab roofs. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.
For an older house near a landmark such as St John the Evangelist, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. Trees in and around The Flashes shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters. If you look after a building such as St John's CofE Aided Infant School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.
