Chimney survey in Hampton Hill
Many terraced and semi-detached homes share their chimney stacks with a neighbour. We check whatever is safely visible and what the owner gives us access to. If a defect appears to be on the neighbour’s side, we note it, so you can talk to them. Everything is written up with photos and what we recommend. We’re frequently asked to look into signs that a stack is leaning and frost-damaged brickwork on the stack, across brick chimney stacks, chimney pots and cowls and flaunching.
London has a great many flats in converted houses and purpose-built blocks, where the roof is typically a shared part of the building. Whoever looks after the building needs a clear picture of the roof, chimneys and gutters. A defect on a shared roof can reach more than one flat. A report gives everyone the same picture to plan from, with photos.
We write the report in plain English, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Photos show what each point refers to, and recommendations are put in order of urgency where relevant.

What happens on the day
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes an hour or two at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. For a visit in Hampton Hill, parking and access are the things to plan: let us know about permits, visitor bays or off-street space, which floor the property is on and how to get into the loft. We then look at whatever is safely visible from ground level, windows, the loft and, where it’s safe, the roof itself.
- You tell us whether any stacks are shared, unused or leaning.
- The flashings and the roof around each chimney are inspected.
- The top of each stack is checked for cracked flaunching and loose pots.
- We note the brickwork, pointing and any sign of leaning.
- You receive a written report setting out what needs attention first.

Useful tips for Hampton Hill property owners
You don’t need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:
- Note any damp on chimney breasts and when it appears
- Glance at the stacks from the street now and then
- Check unused flues are capped with ventilation
- Remove aerials or dishes from the stack if they’re no longer needed
Where another specialist is needed, such as a structural engineer or sweep, we explain why. It gives them a clear starting point.
Check your stacks from the street or garden after a storm. With binoculars, you can often see cracked flaunching or lifted lead.
Checking the roof from the ground
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
Surveys for landlords and agents in Hampton Hill
Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on.
Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when booking and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.
What a chimney survey does not cover
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:
- Whether the flue is safe to use
- Parts of the stack that cannot be seen safely or belong to a neighbour we can’t access
- Hidden damage within the stack
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will recommend the right survey. What a survey covers and does not.
What this survey covers
- Chimney breasts
- Brick chimney stacks
- Flaunching

Hampton Hill: your questions answered
Can parking be tricky for a visit in Hampton Hill?
It rarely stops a survey, but it is worth planning. Let us know the parking rules on your street and we’ll work around them.
Can a landlord with a rental near Fulwell station book a roof survey?
Of course. Let us know whether a tenant or an agent will let us in, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.
Do you take photos of the roof?
Yes. The report includes photos of what we found.
Do you need to go on the roof to check the chimney?
We look from the ground, from windows and from the loft where it is safe. Where applicable, our Premium Survey adds a drone inspection for a closer view. The report is clear about anything that couldn’t be seen.
How many surveys have you done?
We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.
How much is a survey?
Prices start from £150, including VAT. We confirm the price for your roof before booking, based on the roof’s size, access and package. For a price, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Is a leaning chimney dangerous?
It’s worth having a leaning stack checked. We record the lean, the brickwork and the pointing, and recommend a structural engineer where it may be a structural concern.

When to book a survey in Hampton Hill
Where a chimney meets the roof, lead flashings keep water out. They can lift in wind, crack with age or pull out of the mortar joints. Failed flashings are one of the most common causes of damp around chimneys. Lead is also a target for theft.
A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:
- Redundant stacks capped without ventilation
- Pots or cowls that look unsafe
- A stack that appears to lean
- Gaps in the mortar around the pots
If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near Bentall Centre, a roof report helps plan work around trading rather than after a leak.
What to check before booking
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- Their track record with similar roofs
- Are they insured for the work?
Chimney surveys in Hampton Hill: local notes
Strawberry Hill House, about 1.2 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Hampton Hill. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. In outer London, interwar semis with hipped, tiled roofs sit alongside older slate-roofed terraces. If your home in Hampton Hill is one of them, bay roofs, hips and later dormers each have their own details. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.
If you own a rental within reach of Fulwell station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. For an older house near a landmark like Hampton Hill United Reformed Church, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.
