  • Flashings pulling away from the stack
  • Flaunching that has broken away

Chimney surveys for Hampton homes and businesses

Before and after the survey

You don’t need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:

  • Make sure fixings on the stack are secure
  • Keep track of stains on chimney breasts
  • Don’t use a ladder to reach the stack yourself
  • Check your stacks from ground level after strong winds

Once we have been, the findings are written up with photos. It explains the condition of each part of the stack and any damp inside. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.

Look at your chimneys from ground level now and then, particularly after strong winds. With binoculars, you can often see cracked flaunching or lifted lead.

Chimney survey in Hampton: what you get

A chimney stands up above the roof, exposed to wind, rain and frost on every side. Over the years, the flaunching cracks, the pointing wears and flashings lift. Water then gets into the stack and can show as damp on a chimney breast or a stain in the loft. A survey finds these problems and records them with photos. If you’ve noticed mortar washing out of the joints and loose, cracked or missing pots, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Trees around homes in smaller places like Hampton drop leaves, twigs and moss onto roofs and into gutters. Blocked gutters overflow and soak the walls below, and moss holds water against tiles. It is the kind of slow problem a roof report picks up early. Moss on the roof and weeds in the gutter are both easy to spot from ground level.

The report records the chimney stack as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later.

How the survey changes by roof type

Brick stacks

Spalled bricks, where the face has flaked off, are a sign of water and frost. Any spalling is noted with photos.

Chimney pots and cowls

A loose or cracked pot can fall from height. We photograph each pot and note any damage.

Questions from Hampton

I let a flat near Herne Bay station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. Just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know about the building.

Is the coastal weather around Hampton hard on roofs?

Near the coast, roofs face more wind and more salt than further inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.

Is it a problem to have an unused chimney?

An unused stack still needs to stay weathertight and ventilated. Capping without airflow can lead to damp. Our survey records its condition and how it’s capped, so you can decide with a builder what to do.

Does someone need to be in?

Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

How do you inspect a chimney without scaffolding?

Each stack is viewed from the safest viewpoints: the ground, nearby windows and higher points, and the loft space. A drone inspection is included in our Premium Survey where it applies. If part of a stack cannot be seen, the report says so.

How much does a chimney survey cost in Hampton?

Chimney survey starts from £150, including VAT. You will know the price for the job before booking, and it depends on the roof’s size, access and the package you choose. For a price, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.

Hampton homes and their roofs

Hampton lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof, while driving rain finds any gap. Handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles hung on pegs through two holes, are typical of older Kent buildings. Kent’s older buildings take in oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses as well. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.

If you look after a building like Hampton Primary School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. Take an older house close to St Andrew's Church: old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs. If you own a rental within reach of Herne Bay station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.

Hampton is about 2 miles west of Herne Bay, in Kent. If you’re in Hampton, booking works exactly as it does anywhere else: get in touch, agree the price and pick a day. Hampton is one of the places in Kent we cover. We also survey roofs in Canterbury.

We cover every part of the CT6 postcode area for chimney surveys and the streets around it. If you need a chimney survey at a property on Riley Avenue, Essex Avenue and Alvis Avenue or anywhere close by, we can survey it. We also cover the places around Hampton: Swalecliffe (2 miles south-west), West End (2 miles south), Chestfield (2 miles south-west), Tankerton (2 miles west) and Radfall (3 miles south-west). Larger places within reach include Canterbury (6 miles south), Margate (12 miles east), Ramsgate (14 miles east), Broadstairs (14 miles east), Faversham (10 miles south-west) and Minster (13 miles west).

Landmarks near Hampton

Typical jobs here are in homes near Hampton Inn and Herne Bay High School. The nearest railway station is Herne Bay station, roughly 1 mile south-east of the centre. Other landmarks nearby include Whitstable and Tankerton Hospital (2.2 miles west) and Tankerton Castle (2.8 miles west). The countryside around Hampton includes West Blean and Thornden Woods.

What you can safely check yourself

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey.

It helps to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Share it with us as you book.

What happens if roof problems are left?

A loose pot or brick can fall from height. A survey picks them out so they can be made safe by a roofer. Around Hampton, leaves and moss in gutters lead to overflowing water and damp walls. Dealing with the cause is simple; drying out a wall is not.

Our price is from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included.

What we do, step by step

The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the chimney stack as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. A visit to a smaller place like Hampton is no different on the day: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. Point out any stains, cracks or loose pieces you’ve spotted.

  1. We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
  2. We look at every stack from wherever it can safely be seen.
  3. We photograph and record the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
  4. Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there’s access.
  5. The report, with photographs and recommendations, is emailed to you.
