Chimney Survey in Mousehill
A survey of chimney stacks, pots, flashings and flaunching for Mousehill, from an experienced roof surveyor. Every survey comes with a written report and photographs.
- Cracked or missing flaunching
- Redundant stacks capped without ventilation
- Loose, cracked or missing pots
Practical tips
From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Keep track of stains on chimney breasts
- Find out whether changes to a stack need permission
- Glance at the stacks from the street now and then
- Make sure fixings on the stack are secure
Many people use the report to get quotes for the work. With the same list in front of each contractor, comparing quotes is simpler.
Keep an eye on chimney breasts for new damp patches. Early signs are easier to trace.
How a chimney survey works in Mousehill
Many homes have chimneys that are no longer used. A disused stack still needs looking after. If it has been capped without ventilation, damp can build up inside it. Our survey looks at how each unused stack has been capped and checks the breasts for damp. The report sets out what we found and what we recommend. Common reasons to book are a stack that appears to lean and frost-damaged brickwork on the stack, across lead flashings, brick chimney stacks and chimney pots and cowls.
In a small place like Mousehill, many roofs stand in the open, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.
The report records the chimney stack as we found it on the day. It is useful right away, and a good reference for later.

Honest limits
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Gas safety checks, which need a Gas Safe registered engineer
- Conditions inside walls
- Whether the flue is safe to use
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey. The full list of what we check.
What we check
- Shared and party-wall stacks
- Chimney breasts
- Lead flashings
- Flaunching
- Chimney pots and cowls
- Brick chimney stacks
Different roofs, different checks
Brick stacks
Most chimney stacks are built of brick, with mortar joints that wear over time. We check the bricks for spalling and the joints for erosion.
Chimney breasts and the loft
In the loft, staining around the stack frequently shows where water is getting in. We record what we see with photographs.

Why act early in Mousehill
Cracked flaunching and worn pointing are often modest repairs when they’re caught early. Leave it, and frost can work the stack loose, and the work grows. Around Mousehill, older homes often have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Our price is from £150, including VAT.

How the survey works
We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. A typical visit takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, and more on a big or complicated roof. Somewhere as small as Mousehill, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- Each stack is inspected from safe positions outside.
- We photograph and record the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
- We look for damp on chimney breasts and in the roof space.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations by email.
Preparing for the visit
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
How to book
Photos help, if you have them. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine; never climb up to get a better view. To send them or to book, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.

What a chimney survey looks like in Mousehill
With Loseley Park about 3.8 miles north-east, Mousehill sits in an area with a long building history. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. In Surrey, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, with tile-hanging on many upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.
If you let a flat or house near Milford (Surrey) station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near St John the Evangelist's Church, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. Living close to Rodborough Common is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.

Mousehill questions
Is my home in Mousehill listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Can a landlord with a rental near Milford (Surrey) station book a roof survey?
Yes, that is a common request. We just need to know who will give access, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.
Are you insured?
We’re covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
Will I get photos?
Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show.
How much is a survey?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all with VAT included.
How do I arrange a chimney survey in Mousehill?
To book, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.
What do I do with the report?
You receive the written report by email, with photos and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.
What you can safely check yourself
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
