Chimney survey in Stocker's Head: what you get
Damp on a chimney breast can have several causes. It might come in at the top, through worn pointing or porous bricks, or where the flashings meet the roof. Moisture trapped inside a stack with no ventilation can also cause damp. Our survey checks each of these and records the likely cause. That points the work in the right direction. We’re often asked to look into disused chimneys trapping moisture and eroded joints in the brickwork, across flaunching, shared and party-wall stacks and chimney breasts.
Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are frequently the first to give way.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What happens if roof problems are left?
Cracked flaunching and worn pointing are often modest repairs when they’re caught early. Leave it, and frost can work the stack loose and the job gets bigger. Older cottages and farmhouses around Stocker's Head can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. You’ll know the figure before booking.

Stocker's Head: your questions answered
Can a landlord with a rental near Charing station book a roof survey?
Yes, that’s a common request. We just need to know who will give access, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.
Will you come out to Stocker's Head?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Can you survey a chimney stack we share with next door?
Yes. We inspect whatever is safely visible and what you give us access to. Where a problem appears to be on next door’s side, we note it, so you can discuss it with them.
Does the report include photos?
Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible, so you can see what we mean.
How much is a survey?
Chimney survey starts from £150, including VAT. Our three packages are Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Yes, where the survey calls for it and there’s safe access. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where it’s applicable. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

How it works
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take about one to two hours for most homes, a little longer where there are several stacks. For a village or hamlet like Stocker's Head, the journey is planned beforehand: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect what can safely be seen, inside and out.
- We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- We check every stack from wherever it can be seen safely.
- We photograph and record the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there’s access.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations by email.

Related advice
Should I look at the roof myself first?
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That is where a survey comes in.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
What we are asked to look at in Stocker's Head
Aerials and dishes are often fixed to stacks. The extra load in wind can work bricks and joints loose. We check fixings on the stack as part of the survey.
People normally book a survey after spotting one of these:
- Disused chimneys trapping moisture
- Damp patches on chimney breasts
- Lifted or split lead flashings
- Signs that a stack is leaning
If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Peter and St Paul, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- How soon the report will arrive
- What the survey won’t cover
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
When you need someone else
Before booking, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:
- Flue inspections or sweeping
- Hidden sides of a shared stack
- What’s inside the brickwork or behind render, without opening up
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
