Chimney Survey in Challock
Find out what’s going on with the chimney stack before you spend money on it. We carry out chimney surveys in Challock.
- Pots or cowls that look unsafe
- Flashings pulling away from the stack
- Spalled or crumbling bricks
What we cannot see
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Whether the flue is safe to use
- Hidden damage within the stack
- Whether a gas appliance or its flue is safe

Chimney surveys for homes and businesses in Challock
Our chimney survey covers the stack and the details that keep water out around it: pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, bricks and the flashings at the roof line. We also look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there’s safe access. You get a written report with photographs and our recommendations. It suits a single stack on a house as well as several on a larger building. We are often asked to look into disused chimneys trapping moisture and staining on walls around the chimney, on chimney pots and cowls, shared and party-wall stacks and chimney breasts.
Somewhere as small as Challock, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. On older roofs, it’s typically the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
What you get is a clear record of the chimney stack on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later.

- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- The roof’s overall size
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
Prices start from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on how big and how high the roof is, access and the package you choose.
Helping us price your survey
These details help when you get in touch:
- What’s prompted the survey
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- The kind of building and roof involved
- The property’s address and postcode
Getting a price is simple: just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form, let us know about the property and we will explain which survey suits. The price is agreed up front.
FAQs for Challock
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Wye station?
Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. You can phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address and what you need, and we will talk through which survey suits.
Is my home in Challock listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only when it’s safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so we need permission from whoever owns or manages the building. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.
What if it rains on the day?
It depends on the weather and the survey. In strong wind or a downpour, a drone can’t fly and access may not be safe, and we’d agree another day.
How much is a survey?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. The final figure depends on the roof and the package you choose.
Do you look in the loft space?
Normally, if there’s one and it can be reached safely. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.
What we do, step by step
Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. All in, the survey normally takes about one to two hours at most homes, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Somewhere like Challock needs a little journey planning: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.
- You let us know whether any stacks are shared, unused or leaning.
- The flashings and the roof around each chimney are inspected.
- We check the flaunching and pots on every stack.
- We note the brickwork, pointing and any sign of leaning.
- You receive a written report setting out what needs attention first.
Getting ready for the survey
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
- Let us know about parking before the day

Flaunching
Flaunching is the mortar on top of a stack that holds the pots and sheds water. Once it cracks, water can get straight into the brickwork.
Brick stacks
Brick stacks rely on sound pointing to keep water out. The survey looks for crumbling bricks and worn or missing mortar.
What a chimney survey looks like in Challock
Many older homes in Kent have handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles held by pegs through two holes, and tile-hanging on their upper walls. Kent’s older buildings take in oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses as well. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first. The wider area around Challock has a long history of building, with Belmont House and Gardens about 3.9 miles north. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
If you look after a building like Challock Primary School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. For landlords with property near Wye station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak. Take an older house close to Church of St Cosmas and St Damian: its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us as you book and it will help the survey.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
