Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when you book and we will plan the visit with that in mind.
If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in, at a time agreed ahead of time. We survey on any day of the week, which can make access easier.
How a chimney survey works in Turnham Green
If a chimney looks out of line, it is worth getting it checked. A stack may lean because the mortar on one side has weakened, which can happen over many years of use. We record the lean and the condition of the brickwork and pointing. If the stack looks like a structural issue, the report recommends a structural engineer. Common reasons to book are unused flues sealed without airflow and pots or cowls that look unsafe, across flaunching, lead flashings and brick chimney stacks.
London has a great many flats in converted houses and purpose-built blocks, where the roof is usually a shared part of the building. Landlords, managing agents and residents’ companies need to know what condition it’s in and what work is coming up. A defect on a shared roof can reach more than one flat. With a written report and photographs, everyone can plan from the same facts.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

How the survey changes by roof type
Chimney breasts and the loft
Damp patches on chimney breasts often point to a problem above. We check them and at the stack in the loft where there is safe access.
Chimney pots and cowls
For unused flues, we check whether caps or cowls allow ventilation. Poor capping can lead to damp inside the stack.
Chimney surveys around Turnham Green
Outer London has a good many Victorian and Edwardian terraces with slate roofs, but also a great many interwar semis, often with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles. On a semi of that age, the small roofs over the bays, the hip tiles and any later dormer each need their own look. Whatever the covering, it’s often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first. About 0.2 miles west lies Hogarth's House, a reminder of how long the area around Turnham Green has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
The streets around a church such as St. Nicholas Church are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. Homes near green spaces such as Dukes Meadows can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. If you own a rental within reach of Chiswick station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.

Turnham Green: your questions answered
How do I find out if my home in Turnham Green is listed?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
I let a flat near Chiswick station. Can you check the roof?
Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and what you need, and we will talk through which survey suits.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes. The report includes photos of what we found.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. Roofs over flats are frequently shared, so the building owner or managing agent needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we are given access to.
How long is the visit?
Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. The report follows by email.
How experienced are you?
We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
Is a chimney survey the same as a flue inspection?
No. A flue inspection, sweep or gas safety check is a separate job. We check the structure and weathering of the stack and any damp, and we will say if anything suggests the flue needs checking.
How it works
Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photographs. On timing, it usually takes between one and two hours at a typical home, and longer for a large or complex roof. From the street, a London terrace usually shows only its front slope or parapet, so a visit in Turnham Green moves between viewpoints: the pavement, upstairs windows, the loft and any safe spot at the back. Shared stairs or a basement flat? Tell us who holds the keys.
- We go through the chimneys, any damp and any work done on them.
- We look at every stack from wherever it can safely be seen.
- Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
- We look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft space.
- The report, with photos and recommendations, is emailed to you.

Advice
Why act early in Turnham Green
A leaning stack should be looked at sooner rather than later. Our survey records it and says when a structural engineer should look at it, so you know where you stand. Any roof job in Turnham Green means planning around parking, neighbours and access. Knowing what’s needed early gives you time to plan it calmly.
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package matters as well. We’ll give you the figure before anything is booked.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us as you book.
