Alfold Crossways Drone Roof Survey
Know where you stand with the roof before you spend money on it. Drone roof surveys in Alfold Crossways, with photographs and a clear written report.
- Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
- Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
DIY checks: what’s safe
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.
How a drone roof survey works in Alfold Crossways
Before any flight, we check the airspace. Near protected airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If permission isn’t given, we inspect by other means and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. We survey fragile roofs, large and complex roofs and valleys and parapet gutters, and common reasons people get in touch are ridge and hip pieces working loose and cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots.
Some older homes in villages like Alfold Crossways are listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It is useful right away, and a good reference for later, such as when you want to compare after future work.

What a drone roof survey does not cover
No survey can tell you everything, and it’s better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:
- Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying
- A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt

Questions from Alfold Crossways
Is Alfold Crossways within the area you cover?
Yes. Alfold Crossways is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.
Are there drone restrictions around Alfold Crossways?
Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only if it’s safe. We inspect everything that’s safely in view: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
How many surveys have you done?
We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access, while outside access can be discussed as you book.
How long will you be at the property?
It typically takes between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. The written report follows by email.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
How it works
On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen. The survey typically takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. In a small place like Alfold Crossways, access is normally the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
- We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Note where any stains or damp appear

Advice

Why get it checked now?
Photos from a drone survey show how the roof looks today. Next time, you can compare and see what has moved or worn. It helps when you plan ahead. In a small place like Alfold Crossways, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, from £400 with VAT included. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Useful tips for Alfold Crossways property owners
Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:
- Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
- Check there’s room outside for the drone to take off
- Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
- Book early if you’re near an airport
Keep the photos with your property records. They give you something to compare against later, and they help if you sell.
Every so often, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Photograph anything new.
Drones, thermal imaging and Alfold Crossways roofs
Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. If your home is older, it’s worth knowing whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area.
Take an older house close to Church of St Nicholas: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. For any home in Alfold Crossways, it’s the small, early fault that is cheapest to put right.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses
For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait.
Letting agents can arrange access with tenants. Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which helps when tenants work during the week.
