Drone roof survey in Amberley: what you get
Drones need reasonable weather. We do not fly in strong wind or heavy rain, because control and safety come first. If the day turns out unsuitable, we will talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. We check the forecast ahead of the visit and again on site. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. Common reasons to book are hidden gutters full of leaves and moss and weeds taking hold up top, on large and complex roofs, fragile roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.
In a village or hamlet like Amberley, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from ground level. Weather and airspace are checked before the visit. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters, with a note and a photo for each point. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

Why get it checked now?
Planning roof work without seeing the roof is a gamble. You get photos of every part we can see, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. You can tackle the urgent items first. Outbuildings and barns around Amberley are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, from £400 including VAT. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.

What we do, step by step
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. A typical visit takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Somewhere as small as Amberley, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.
Before the survey
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Tell us about parking before the day

For landlords and managing agents
Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on, photos included.
Letting agents frequently book on a landlord’s behalf, and the report can go to both. Access is agreed with the tenant in advance.
Amberley: your questions answered
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Amberley?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.
Is Amberley within the area you cover?
Yes. Amberley is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.
Do you look in the roof space?
If there is a loft and safe access to it, yes. The loft space can show things the outside cannot, like damp timbers, staining or daylight.
Will I get photos?
Yes. Photos are part of every report, so you can see each point for yourself.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only when it is safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest.
How long is the visit?
It typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. You will then get the report by email, on the timescale of your package.
What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
- Photos in conditions too poor to fly
- A flight where airspace permission is refused
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll suggest the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.
Roof types and parts we check
- Fragile roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Tall and steep roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Large and complex roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
Flying and imaging in Amberley
Parham House, about 1.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Amberley. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.
Take an older house close to The Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

What we’re asked to look at in Amberley
Chimney tops take the worst of the weather. Cracked flaunching, loose pots and eroded pointing are often invisible from below. A drone gets close enough to see them in detail.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
- Lifted or split lead flashings
- Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
- Ridge pieces that have lifted
Anyone responsible for a site like Amberley CofE Primary School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

DIY checks: what’s safe
Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date.
