Drone roof surveys in Ash

What we do, step by step

Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photographs. On timing, most surveys take about one to two hours for most houses, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Some parts of a survey depend on the weather, so a visit to Ash is booked with the forecast in mind: the parts that need calm, dry weather are planned around it.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. If the loft can be reached safely, it’s checked too.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Find any records of previous roof work
  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey

About our drone roof survey in Ash

A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. We keep the camera on the roof we are surveying, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is shared, a word with next door beforehand helps. We inspect only what the owner has asked us to. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. We survey tall and steep roofs, fragile roofs and large and complex roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are vegetation in valleys and gutters and outlets choked with leaves and silt.

Older cottages and houses around Ash may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.

Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly.

What we look for on each type of roof

Chimney stacks

Our drone check of a chimney is visual, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. We will say if a specialist is needed.

Large commercial roofs

Older cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos. We flag it in the report so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.

Questions from Ash

Is my home in Ash listed or in a conservation area?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Will you come out to Ash?

Yes. Ash is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Do drone rules differ in central London?

Parts of central London are restricted, including areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs, and flights there need NATS permission. We check the airspace for your address and apply where needed.

What if it is windy or raining on the day?

We do not fly in strong wind or heavy rain. Whether we can fly depends on the conditions on the day. If we can’t fly, we’ll arrange another day.

Does your drone take thermal images?

No, the drone survey is photographic. For thermal imaging, look at the Premium Survey or our thermal roof survey.

How experienced are you?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.

What happens next?

You will get the report by email, with photographs and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Ash

Ash is within about 5 miles of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Nicholas, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Anyone responsible for a site like Ash Cartwright and Kelsey Church of England Primary School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Ash is about 7 miles north-west of Deal, in Kent. Wherever you are in Ash, we can carry out drone roof surveys at your property, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday. Ash is one of the towns and villages in Kent where we work for drone roof surveys. Canterbury is in our area too.

Here we cover the CT3 postcode area for drone roof surveys. Streets in the area include The Street, Goodban Square and Chilton Place, and we cover them all. If you are just outside Ash, we cover Guilton (1 mile west), Weddington (1 mile north-east), Durlock (1 mile west), Cop Street (1 mile north) and Coombe (1 mile south-east). We also work in nearby towns like Canterbury (9 miles west), Margate (8 miles north-east), Dover (10 miles south), Folkestone (14 miles south), Ramsgate (7 miles north-east) and Broadstairs (9 miles north-east).

What a survey costs

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:

  • House, block, shop or office
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • The size of the roof

Our price is from £400, including VAT. The final price depends on how big and how high the roof is, how it can safely be seen and the package you choose.

Helping us price your survey

Getting the details right at the start saves time. It’s useful to include:

  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date
  • Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • What made you get in touch
  • The address and postcode of the property

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from ground level or a window, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To get started, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

When to book a survey in Ash

After storms, owners want to know what has moved. Damage on a high or steep roof is hard to judge from the garden. Close-up photos make it clear what has been disturbed.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
  • Damage after a storm that cannot be seen from below
  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone

Goodnestone Park lies about 3.3 miles south-west, so building around Ash goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof itself.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey
  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • What happens after the report arrives

What’s in a roof survey

Landlords, agents and block managers in Ash

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. We survey on any day of the week, which can make access easier.

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant, which helps with budgets and planning.

Why act early in Ash

A drone survey disturbs nothing on the roof. Fragile slates and tiles stay as they are, so the survey doesn’t create new problems. With lower homes, common in places like Ash, there’s little between a roof defect and the ceiling, so a small leak can mark a ceiling within a few storms. Finding the cause first saves a second job inside.

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. You will know the figure before booking.
