Drone roof survey in Ashwell End
Before any flight, we check the airspace. Flight restriction zones around airports like Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If permission isn’t given, we inspect by other means and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. We survey tall and steep roofs, chimney stacks and large and complex roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are vegetation in valleys and gutters and flashings that have come away.
Somewhere as small as Ashwell End, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned beforehand. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

What we do, step by step
The aim of the visit is simple: to see as much of the roof as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Notes and photographs go into the written report. The visit normally takes about 1–2 hours for most houses, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Around Ashwell End, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- You give us the address and tell us about the roof.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
- The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Tell us about parking before the day

What else we do in Ashwell End
What we’re asked to look at in Ashwell End
Chimney tops take the worst of the weather. Cracked flaunching, loose pots and eroded pointing are often invisible from below. A drone gets close enough to see them in detail.
Here are some of the things we see often:
- Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
- Ridge and hip pieces working loose
- Flashings that have come away
- Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
Take a building like Ashwell Primary School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
What to check before booking
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
- Which limits apply to the survey
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
Different roofs, different checks
Large commercial roofs
Big roofs on offices, warehouses and units take time to inspect. The drone covers the roof area by area.
Ridges and hips
Wind lifts loose ridge and hip tiles. Spotting them early stops them falling.
DIY checks: what’s safe
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
FAQs for Ashwell End
Do you cover smaller places like Ashwell End?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Is drone flying allowed in Ashwell End?
Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.
Are you insured?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is frequently shared, so we need permission from the freeholder or managing agent. We can only inspect what we are given access to.
Can you survey in bad weather?
A survey can usually go ahead in light rain, and it can even help show where water is getting in. Heavy rain or strong wind can ground a drone and make the roof unsafe, so if conditions aren’t right we’ll arrange another day with you.
Are you structural engineers?
No. We point out what can be seen, like sagging or deflection, but we’re not structural engineers and do not carry out calculations. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.
When does the report arrive?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed, ready to forward.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, with the most urgent items set out first.
With a portfolio of properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the addresses.
Tips from our surveys
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Let us know what you want to see
- Keep dogs indoors during the visit
- Check there’s room outside for the drone to take off
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
The Premium Survey report comes the same day. It includes the drone photos where a flight was possible.
Look at the roof from ground level after strong winds. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone survey can show what has shifted.
Drones, thermal imaging and Ashwell End roofs
The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times. Historic houses such as Hinxworth Place, about 0.9 miles west, show how far back building in the area around Ashwell End goes. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near St Mary's Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
