DIY checks: what’s safe
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Drone roof survey in Bachelor's Bump
Our drone weighs under 250g, and we are a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. We keep it in sight throughout, and within the 120-metre limit that applies to all drones in the open category. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Before every flight, we check the airspace and the weather. Safety comes first on every visit. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, large and complex roofs and tall and steep roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are blistered or cracked flat roof coverings and debris building up in hidden gutters.
Villages like Bachelor's Bump often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

How the survey works
Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. It normally takes an hour or two for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. In a hamlet or village like Bachelor's Bump, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
- Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
- On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Let us know about parking before the day

Advice
Bachelor's Bump: your questions answered
Are there drone restrictions around Bachelor's Bump?
Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Bachelor's Bump?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
How soon will I get the report?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. All of them come by email.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach.
How do I book a survey in Bachelor's Bump?
It is easiest to call 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Let us know the address and a little about the roof, and we’ll recommend the right survey. We survey seven days a week.
What if it rains on the day?
A survey can usually go ahead in light rain. Strong wind or heavy rain can stop drone flights and make roof access unsafe, so if conditions are not right we will arrange another day with you.
How long will you be at the property?
Most surveys take about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. We’ll confirm the timing when booking.

How the survey changes by roof type
Chimney stacks
The drone shows the outside of the stack, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. If the flue needs a specialist, we’ll tell you.
Valleys and parapet gutters
Blocked outlets in hidden gutters cause many leaks. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.
Drones, thermal imaging and Bachelor's Bump roofs
Bachelor's Bump lies within about 2 miles of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.
If you look after a building like The Hastings Academy, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Shop and office owners around Priory Meadow Shopping Centre may find that a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. For an older house near a landmark like Christ Apostolic Church Hastings, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.
